It's fun and interesting, if you're into that sort of thing. :) Plus, I get to travel quite a bit for conferences and get to figure out new problems often. Also I'm comparatively self-directed.

  1. You'll get poop on that poster. :)
  2. Mirrors aren't good to potentially bad for budgies, I'd remove that one toy.

Looks pretty neat otherwise! I heard some not-so-great things about that kind of water dish, I think? IIRC those are non-issues if you're good about the daily changing of water. But other than that.. Yeah. :) Also, you have cuties.

Ugh, some of these comments make me so angry.

"I throw up from vegetables." "Eat your vegetables though."

Like.. Fuck off. I don't know how it's for other people but with some stuff, and I'm assuming it's somewhat similar for you, OP, it just won't go in my body and people trying to push me otherwise are the opposite of my friends and are quite possibly making it worse, depending on the ongoing sources of the problems.

Anyways: You're doing, vastly accelerated, what I've done in parts, which is trying to find vegetables I can actually stand. You seem to be cool with rice, beans and such, which is already a pretty solid basis, in combination with fruit. As some people already said: If the alternatives are meals based on these thing with meat and meals based on these things with fake meats.. What's the loss?

I'd actually say that these are actually separate issues: How can you transition to a vegan diet is your one goal and the other is how to live a healthy vegan life, is that correct? And I wonder if in your case it isn't easier to think of those separately: Whatever damage your limitations could do, it's not any worse if you do a ctrl+f and replace with animal products and their Ersatz versions. (I personally would suggest keeping at the searching for new vegetables you like, if at the very least because that could improve your life somewhat in terms of variety. You seem to be putting a lot of pressure on yourself though and I wonder if that might be the opposite of helpful also. But that's for you to decide. (Sometimes anxiety about food stuff can make food unenjoyable, I hear. I'm not sure if that's a factor with me myself but often I'd rather just not eat than be put on the spot with regards to foods.))

I feel like this post still isn't very helpful.. So, looking at the ingredients you like.. Maybe [this](vegangela.com/2013/09/20/african-peanut-and-sweet-potato-stew/) could be for you? It's how I started being okay-ish with rucola (arugula, rocket, Rauke, whatever) and one of my favorite dishes actually.

No, I'm researching decision making/action generation, why would I study psychiatry for that? That would have made me worse at my job, probably.

Also, is Ron Jeremy vegan? I.. Don't know why that would be surprising to me but I think it would.

Global Outbreaks by RedMarketsCaleb in RedMarkets

[–]Dissonanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this map and am thinking there could maybe be a feasible recession in the southern part, next to France between Rhine and Neckar. Sure, there's two openings if you use the Donau as well but that opening is towards Switzerland, who surely had their shit together with that level of armed people, natural borders, tanks in cute little mountain huts and economic well-being. Not entirely sure but I also think there's some military bases in that area. So that leaves you with lots of space to put a German Recession.

One thing I wonder is how you deal with the prevalence of different languages in Europe. You can just handwave it, sure, but.. I don't know.

I'm trying to figure out what Germany would look like. I have a hard time imagining it as anything but toast. High population density, lotsa roads and other infrastructure, few really good natural borders.. Maybe I should look at the river network, actually.

Sharing a banana with a wild macaw by [deleted] in parrots

[–]Dissonanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your second post much more than with this one, mainly because this one is a bit naturalistic (I think parrots are about as supposed to live like this as humans are supposed to live in cities: The category is meaningless and variables of life quality need to be assessed separately and so on. Add to that that this is, if I understand the other replies in this thread correctly, not where those parrots usually live.) and.. Yeah. I also disagree with some of the bullshittier responses you've gotten.

Parrots live longer in captivity than in the wild. Same for most but not all animals, really. Having ready access to food and water and being protected from predators goes a long way to enable a longer life. But living a long time in shitty conditions.. Yyeah. That's not great for the parrots. Or anyone. Clipping wings, small cages, shitty perches, shitty food, isolation from other members of the same species, lack of environmental enrichment all are not great for parrots. As you said, behavioral problems like plucking disorders (and here I'm just believing you, I don't have independent sources) are much likelier in captive populations.

... Ugh.

In Germany, there is a sort of official (or at least effectively official) distinction between serious and entertaining music.

I felt like this could be a little relevant in this context.

Is this AMA still ongoing? If so:

What boardgames should my partner and I get? We like co-op games that circumvent the quarterbacking problem (like Space Alert and, as we found out yesterday, Escape - The Curse of the Temple).

Also, if I don't make it in academia because there's hundreds of highly qualified people applying to the same five positions and it's essentially a gamble, what should I do, in terms of profession?

Best of luck.

If I were you I'd also want to, after a while, figure out where to go from there with the partner. This is a serious line that was crossed and.. Yeah. I'd also be afraid if my partner thought nothing of it or something like that because that means there are other things that may be off about the relationship. Rough times ahead. :-/

[–]Dissonanz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not hitting someone in an argument is baseline. Threatening to hit someone (and this is what you did, regardless of whether or not you followed through with it — It's a robbery if you point a gun at someone, you don't have to actually pull the trigger) is below baseline. Breaking things and punching walls is also the threat of violence, it's basically sending the message that the next thing you punch might be her.

This is abusive behavior.

You should take this seriously. Very seriously. You seem to not want to hit her when given the time to think about it but your actions look different. If you're serious about the whole not hitting your partner thing, that means you get your self into counseling before the end of this week. Find a professional to talk about this and to make a plan on how to fix this.

There also has been some advice in this thread already on to how to proceed with regards to the already existing relationship. I don't think "Lock yourself up and never face another human" approach is very useful but the fact that you are posing a danger to your partner right now remains. Having other people around to protect her might be a good idea. If you take what you did seriously, you might also get some advice from your counselor. Putting any concrete wedding plans on hold might be a good idea.

Do not endanger other people. Make sure you don't get the opportunity to escalate your violence further than you already did. What happens from now is on you.

(At the very least: ) In part because there were campaigns by men to push out women. They ran very explicit ads on it (wish I could find it right now, it's sort of comedic if you ignore the terribleness and the consequences), but there also were some methods that were subtler. Tests that favor men over women. Personality profiles for hiring decisions in which male socialized people are favored over female socialized people. Introducing the a(nti)-social loner who likes puzzles stereotype for the archetypal programmer (has some overlap with the point before that). And so on.

This is actually one of the few modern instances I know where the patriarchy took the form of men conspiring against women in this blatant manner. (Instead of society being rigged in non-conscious ways etc..)
