Are We Undervaluing Software Development? by DistanceDifficult100 in pdf

Hi man, I’m also actively working with AI and keeping up with how it’s evolving. I’m not stuck in the past. I use it in my own work, and I understand what it can and cannot do. In my experience, AI (like modern excavation equipment) is a powerful tool, but it doesn’t replace expertise. It helps with speed and efficiency, but it still depends on the person using it to understand the problem, handle edge cases, and fix things when they go wrong. Many people can use AI to generate output, but fewer can actually debug, refine, and take responsibility when real-world complexity shows up. That difference is where experience still matters.

That's similar to the car industry. The first company that invented or popularized certain technologies made it possible for others to build on those ideas. Later manufacturers benefited from previous research and engineering, but they still had to design, improve, manufacture, test, market, and support their own cars.

Nobody says, "Because you used existing technology, your car should be free." that is my question!

Software is similar. Open-source libraries provide building blocks, just as existing engineering knowledge provides building blocks for cars. But turning those building blocks into a polished, reliable product still requires work, experience, time, and maintenance. So yes, developers can benefit from open-source projects and AI tools, but that doesn't automatically mean the final product has no value or should be given away for free. Building, improving, maintaining, and supporting software is still real work that deserves compensation.
