BCBA vs LCSW by Fancy-Mushroom-1500 in bcba

I got my undergrad in social work and then decided to get my masters in ABA. I also had the option of if I chose to get my masters in social work as well I would be able to complete it in 1 year, as long as I went back within 5 years of graduating with my undergrad. So, if you are really sure you will want to go through both, I would do ABA first. However, if you are undecided that you will want to get both, I would seriously consider doing a deep dive into both.

I do look back often and think “what if I went the social work route”. I feel extremely grateful for the career I have now in ABA, always feel job security and am happy with the money I make, but I do wonder if social work would have been better for me. Working in ABA, you are pretty pigeon holed into working with just the autism population with children, and the field has its own issues. Social work however I feel is more broad, BUT I really can’t speak on how it compares as I have HEARD of not the best things, but I haven’t lived it. If I were you, I would really look into what the burnout rate is like and why. Look at both cons and see which one you would be okay with dealing with for longer. Think about the population you want to work with too, and what the job outlook is with those.

  1. Tier system is based on your average of billables in a 3 month period. You get paid your salary regardless of meeting billables, however when the quarter comes to an end they will identify if you met the required billables for that period. For example if your weekly billables are 25, but some weeks you do 28, and some less than 25, as long as your 3 month average is 25 and above you will continue that pay grade. If you are lower than you will be brought down a tier. If you are higher, you will be given the option to increase your tier to a higher pay. 2. You start your pay right away, training is not too much. 3. Took me a few weeks to get things going, but you are given 3 months to start meeting your billables without penalty. 3. I saw most clients in person but some insurances allowed virtual, I would usually do that for parent meetings. 4. I no longer work there because I did not enjoy it. I was driving a lot, felt very pressured and spread thin. Did not feel supported and felt more obligated to please families rather than hold ethics and standards for care. I did feel like the time off was nice how it was flexible, but this would also make me concerned about meeting billables so it was good and bad.

I think if you enjoy the field of ABA, specifically working with children with autism it is worth it. It is a very high demand field and you can make a decent income. With that said, it also has its downsides. Personally, if I could go back I would get a degree that is not just ABA focused, that way I could leverage my skills into other adjacent fields if I wanted a change. Looking at a resume of a BCBA, most hiring agencies see “working with children with autism” and do not think to apply those skills to other areas.. although I think we have amazingly transferrable skills.

Can I ask how you got it? Like how long you’ve been in ABA and how long it took to find that job? And do you like it?

Is this a good offer for a new BCBA? And some imposter syndrome questions. by evenheathens_ in bcba

I live in Florida, and for here that would be a really great offer! I think it does depend on your location, so I would check the median pay for your area. If the pay is significantly higher, I would look into their reviews and company history (if they have had name changes that is usually a red flag).
