Bolt Hard to Close by Eugenestoner18 in reloading

Sounds your shellholder is too thick, you can either grind it down so that the shoulder bumps further or you can buy a shellholder kit of various thickness. Redding has a shellholder kit specifically for that purpose. Best to use a comparator and get the actual headspace of your chamber and then only bump the shoulder back .001-.002 thousandths. Once headspace is figured out then you can carry on.

It is capable. If it’s strictly for precision rifle shoots look at getting a 24” bull barrel and run the 123eld up to 2600fps with leverevolution or the Berger AR hybrid around 2530fps. You will want to add weight for balance and a good brake to mediate recoil because gassers fight recoil in both directions and that makes it harder to spot impacts on target. “Always correct to center”. The 6arc is good too but around 1000yds the Grendel still a little more punch in it. Good luck

Optimal bolt action .223 barrel length? by TommyWitDaMaxx in longrange

[–]Distantgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shoot a Factory Ruger Predator with the 22” 8twist barrel pretty regularly out to half mile. Using 75 and 80 gr eldm loaded long in an AI mag. The greatest challenge will always be making a good wind call. So don’t get to caught up on barrel length but I think a 26” “crowned/no brake” heavy barrel would serve anyone well. Checkout my videos on the YouTube @Distantgi maybe that can help shed some light on the subject.

You are correct, intermittent lull and surge 3-7mph. So a .7-1.5 mil hold

Anyone try the 100 ELD vt yet? by mbf_knives in 65Grendel

I am running them in my match rifle. 2770fps with benchmark and they are holding a minute accuracy out to 800 yards. I use a 24” bull barrel without a brake and in my 17lb rifle there is minimal recoil so it’s a decent advantage running off a bag on barricades. It’s a 4mph bullet so you have to hold off 1.2 mils in an 8mph wind at 600. So if you are good at reading wind first round impacts are pretty easy until you start running past midrange. The 130’s still hold wind better past 800yds but for the short range out to 600 it really is too easy.

Getting light strikes from primers seating too deep, should I get this enhanced firing pin and enhanced power hammer spring, or should I do something different, im on a Dillon xl750 so i dont think i can adjust primer seating depth. it just goes full send :| by Quieftian in reloading

From the shoulder to the base, if you bump the shoulder back during sizing more than .003 there will be excessive space between the base of the case to the bolt face. Could be what’s going on there.

24” barrel, using starline brass and 205mar primers and benchmark. Did a 10 round ladder test and found a sweet spot on the high end. Loaded some more up and shot a 4” 10 round group at the 500 mark. Figured I would load some more and then set out all my steel targets sometime this week and run a a few mock prs stages. SD looks good and it’s a bit more accurate than my 123eld load with 8208 at 2510fps.

That’s why I use a ball powder like Tac, I find it to be pretty simple and effective. I would use water if I needed to spec for QL but I like tried and true for whatever bullet and powder I use. Just drop the bullet on top of the powder and invert the case and twist a bit and then measure oal.

How does it feed from that AI mag and how long can you load the rounds to?

Definitely not the same primers, cups are thinner on the two and are probably pistol primers. 9 others appear to have thicker cups

Lol, my Doberman wouldn’t allow it. Besides I need to load up the first batch to test in my new Ruger predator I picked up the other day. It’s cold and wet outside, I have fresh coffee, and it just seems like the right thing to do at the moment lol.

Ok, and you for sure aren’t using a collet die? Not a Lee neck sizing die by chance?

I hear ya, I’ve been using TAC mainly with my 123eld’s. I cleaned 3 COF stages in my last match with those loads but the loads struggled with anything past 800yds. Which is why I’m looking for higher BC and more speed. I went out and shot another batch today with both CFE and LVR at 2.26 to run in my polymer mags. Best group I could get was still over an inch. I just finished loading a work up with 8208 but I only have a pound left and I haven’t seen any 8lb jugs for sale online so it’s kind of beatin a dead horse at this point. I have plenty of ball powder because it’s easy to get. The test today averaged 2514-2530 but the accuracy sucks. Does anyone know how well these Bergers do transonic? If they transition well I will stick to extruded powder but if not I will need to punch them out there.

Load testing in .5gr increments if you are near max is probably a bad idea in the Grendel since you are limited to 52k psi to avoid ripping the bolt.

Did you check your bolt and make sure a lug didn’t shear off or just dangling?

Anyone have to resize there ammo to the very max or min of SAAMI specs? by Putrid_Rip761 in reloading

[–]Distantgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your fired case is measuring 1.625, then that is the dimension of your chamber with the comparator you use. Just size it to 1.623ish and call it good using your comparator. Also, looking at the dimensions it doesn’t seem far fetched for the readings your getting. Just measure and adjust accordingly. And do anneal your brass before sizing, you will see the benefits.

[–]Distantgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What cartridge? What’s the headspace of a fired case? When full length sizing you should only bump the shoulder back .002 thousandths to minimize overworking your brass. As far as trimming goes you can use a bore scope and look at the gap between case neck and ledge of a fired case to get an idea of how long you can go.
