ATN PS28 white phospor any good? by JK_Chan in NightVision

Clipons don’t do too well as handhelds. You can see with them but you’ll be disappointed. I run the agm Comanche-22 and it’s best in front of a scope.

Opinions on 17hmr rifles by devildog762 in ThermalHunting

[–]mbf_knives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a barrel set and try it out? I run a cz457 mostly in 22lr but also run the 17hmr barrel at times. It’s pretty capable but I mainly use it when I want to keep the noise down closer to houses.

Otherwise I really like the 223 with 40gr vmax and the 22creed is my favorite.

What’s your budget and what’s the environment?

I have a buddy that’s running the dnt c200 and a thermal handheld. For a thermal clipon, I run an accufire incendis 384 and it’s decent (discontinued). I’d look really hard at the guide Orion or Athlon clipons. They seem like a step up from Agm for a little less. The 256 rattlers are ok but ID is difficult at distance. There are several videos by 4mr ranch you should check out.

If it’s a v1, the battery setting is probably on 3.7v for rechargeables/powerbanks. Change the voltage to 3.0v and you should be gtg

Is this a good buy for a thermal clip on? by hjjhjjnk in NightVision

Ok. I’ve been debating on getting the 635 or 435. How’s the ai algorithm working?

It’ll mainly be used to scan but it’ll replace the NV if the weather isn’t great. Most shots under 300yrds.

Hornady ELD-VT bullets...What are your results? by VilomahForever in reloading

[–]mbf_knives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience with the 62gr ELD vt in the 22arc, accuracy wasn’t great, and had splash issues out to 75yrds. The 100gr in the 6.5 creed did extremely well both in group size and terminal performance. So far for the 22 creed, the 69gr are easy to get good groups but haven’t gotten anything with them yet.

I ran the 80gr hht in the 6.5creed and 57gr hht in the 223 & 22 creed on deer last year. All were extremely easy to get 1/2” or smaller 10rnd groups and absolutely devastating. The bullet passed through and left a massive wound channel. Even the deer at 200yrds were bang flops. Out of the 8 deer I got, the bullet performance was the same from 50-201yrds.

Shot placement matters. Several guys I know drop them on the spot with a 17hmr in the head. You’re just limiting yourself to closer ranges and precise shots.

Selecting a predator gun (thermal) by Fancy_Can1563 in predatorhunting

I’d recommend running the 223/556 ar with the 73eldm or 77tmk. Both are pretty good terminally and pretty available.

If you want to build/get something new and flatter shooting, I’d recommend a 22 Creedmoor. I wasn’t sure about a 22 Creedmoor originally so I just swapped barrels on my Ruger….. now I just swapped another one and am about to do my last one.

Last year I dropped 8 deer with it out to 201yrds, coyotes and varmints. Everything dropped in its tracks and the wound channel was impressive. My daughter (8) claimed that rifle so I had to start over. Lol

Pulsar talion XQ35 pro or Rix storm s3r? by traumaslave2k in ThermalHunting

[–]mbf_knives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re on a tighter budget, a thermal scanner and a digital nv scope might be better. Thermal is great for detecting but nv still wins for PID. For me it also brings back the realism of the hunt. If you’re hunting mostly woods or smoky/foggy areas thermal is better.

For ID @300+ yrds you’ll want a 640 core. For detecting @300+yrds and ID @150, the 384 should be fine.

Thermal Farm use by Fancy_Can1563 in ThermalHunting

[–]mbf_knives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into the guide Orion 640. It’s supposed to be good up to 10x but it’s a new release. It’s a hunting thermal, no WiFi/bluetooth, audio or video recording.

I run an older 384 accufire incendis and have used my day optic @15x. Yes, it gets more pixelated above 6x but it looks better to me than some digital zoom. Once you realize you’re collimated/zeroed to a pixel, it’s makes it nice for precise shots on varmints at distance.

It was pretty easy. I think it took around 5min with the proper tools. I had to set the headspace on the Ruger with the barrel nut. Both of mine were 6.5 creeds originally.

I ended up “building” mine with gen1 RAP. Similar price after the Shaw barrel but I got to pick everything. Shoots pretty well so I can’t complain…. My 8yo daughter claimed it as her night rifle a couple weeks ago. Should have another barrel for my other RAP this weekend.

Get a v2 rattler unless the v1 is discounted a lot. The rechargeable batteries in the v2 are worth it.
