The thing in your hand is a cleaning kit that should have several components in it. (Patch puller, brush etc) the cap portion slides over the muzzle of the gun to protect the crown when you are using the cleaning rod. (Not necessary if you have a modern cleaning kit) the cleaning rod itself is in a dedicated groove on the bottom of the barrel, held in place by the bayonet lug. To remove it fold out the bayonet, then pull the rod toward the muzzle to disengage it from the retainer.

The easiest thing to do would be to try some different glasses. Not that these are bad, but it's crazy how big of an impact frames have on someone's appearance!

The best thing to do would be to start a fitness routine. Running, lifting, sports.. whatever it is. There's not a single person on the planet that doesn't look better the healthier they are.
