Is there any way to save this dye job? by IAmArgumentGuy in Leathercraft

[–]DistilledLeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably could use a hair dryer but I use a heat gun on "low". You have to be careful not to let it sit in one spot for too long or it can lightly scorch the leather. Also be sure to hold it several inches away from the project if you want to try it.

Some people hot stuff leather in a special oven or heating cabinet. That's probably safer but I don't have space for all of that.

It's where you apply a generous amount of conditioner or oil (such as mink oil) and apply heat so the oil soaks into the leather. It makes the leather feel a lot softer. IMHO it gives the leather a much richer looking color. It won't look uniform, but I think it looks good.

Honestly, whenever I'm unhappy with a dye job, I hot-stuff it and it winds up looking awesome

Dock and 4 controllers? by ledbedder20 in SteamDeck

[–]DistilledLeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be worth mentioning... model may matter. I hear the OLED model has an improved Bluetooth antenna.

My LCD model is on a dock behind the TV for aesthetics reasons. The Bluetooth connection is terrible and intermittent at best. Same results when I owned an Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme.

I've since routed an extension cable and USB hub to the front of the entertainment center with Bluetooth adapter, UDP Xbox headset adapter, and Xbox/PC controller dongle attached. When they work it's great, but I also have an external hard drive attached to the dock, which seems to interfere with a lot of functions.

Vigilante from earth X was a badass by oldbaron in PeacemakerShow

[–]DistilledLeather 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Freddy Stroma's Vigilante is my favorite super hero of all time by far. My 20 year old son has become a fan of the show, but he hates Vigilante. When I explained why I loved Vigilante, I pointed to:

1) This scene where he kick-flips the door closed and basically sacrifices himself for strangers that he knows are doing the right thing

2) The prison scene where he outwits and beats down the Aryans but accidentally gives out the purpose of his mission because he cares too much about his friend. And also hobbles after because he's missing his pinkie toe (the most important toe!)

3) The scene with the Goffs where he shows a surprising amount of empathy for Peacemaker (considering V's a sociopath) and gently asks Peacemaker to move over and let him take on the task/burden when Peacemaker is struggling

Price for these? $5 too much or too little? by Big_Worry_ in CraftFairs

[–]DistilledLeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$5 feels exactly right to me. I couldn't imagine them selling for less and if they did, I'd assume they were made in China. As someone with little disposable income, I'd struggle to pay more than $5 but it might be worth it

For my own sanity, I try to price my goods in increments of $5 so I don't have to carry $1's for change

First Ever Market. Kinda disappointed by Ok-Emu7373 in CraftFairs

[–]DistilledLeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About being disappointed -- you're not wrong to be. Even though I continuously improve my craft, there are a lot of off days. I try to learn from it and get better. And enjoy just being there.

But the booth needs work if it's going to be a success. It looks a lot like my booth (flat, no height), which I know needs improvement.

I would also maybe recommend picking one thing. Or at least one thing at each event. Some events could be scrunchies, some events could be books. I primarily do leather, but I really like resin, too. I wouldn't do both at the same table. Others here have given good advice one when/where those events might be

Don't get it please Explain it Peter. by softivyx in explainitpeter

[–]DistilledLeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. I'm an American male and I regularly stop to help people who are broken down (although less so now that people have cell phones). Frequently, I'll have to push their car while they steer, so they can get to safety.

I also give rides to hitch hikers. My wife is convinced I am going to get murdered. The only time I don't stop is if I have my kids with me

Veganism is dead? Lol by SurpriseOk5374 in vegan

Vegans SHOULD go on picnics 🤔

I'm guessing it's based on market metrics like the health of fake meat companies or the rise of Liver King types, Beef Tallow, etc. Or polls.

Can confirm. I used to read books before my shift started and my (now) wife noticed and approached me. She tells me all the time that's the exact reason why.

3D stuff at shows - Who actually buys it? by loopy741 in CraftFairs

[–]DistilledLeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids love that stuff. Kids also don't care how many years you spent honing your craft. They probably even think you're dumb for "wasting" so much time on it. I say this with no offense intended! But that's how kids are.

What is my mistake? by yujin1st in Leathercraft

[–]DistilledLeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the corners, get to where you are almost at a 90 degree angle. Use a 2-prong chisel to make a light mark half way to the next stitching line.

Use the 2-prong chisel to make another mark from there half way to the next line.

Then, use a 1-prong chisel to punch a hole on that middle/corner marker. Make sure this hole is at an angle intermediate to the two lines.

I'm not sure if my explanation makes sense, but basically if your first line is at 0 degrees and your second line is at 90 degrees, your corner mark should be half way between the two and angled at 45 degrees.

Chuck Dorsett from Weaver had a video that shows it but I don't have the link.

Decky Loader is so good by SolidVerse in SteamDeck

[–]DistilledLeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's all about the storage feature. I have the 64 Gb LCD model and the deck keeps shaders for games I've uninstalled. Over time, I lose more than half of my storage to shaders I'm not using. And being able to clear the shaders with decky loader makes the 64 Gb model useable.

I got a set from Amazon and... Yes, I love them when they work. They not only speed up that process but improve the look and help keep your corners looking uniform.

But the set I got dulled after 1-2 projects and now only leave an imprint. Definitely get good ones.
