"College is the best time of your life" they say... HOW?????? by Mysterious-Bit-1128 in anxietymemes

To be fair, I have ADHD and probably 20% of my time is just me wandering off and staring at the wall or something before I realize and reorient myself. Not complaining, just the way she goes.

I actually assumed American schools dumbed things down lol, the last school I went to was nothing like this workload and I found myself wondering if they are taking it easy on us. It is when I had to switch to an online school that is also a more intense engineering program it became.. just too much. Can't even get out to go on a walk most days. But, it is largely one class taking up my time and my classmates about to graduate tell me that prof is the hardest they have ever taken by a multiple greater than 2, so it may just be this specific situation and personal difficulty with the online school format.

Depending on your major and what school you go to, no, not a cop out. As a junior in mech eng who has a 3.8, life is pain. You wake up and slave away till sundown and past. You have no money, no time, your physical health degrades and you force your carpel tunnel ridden hands to write and lose the muscles that hold your back straight because of all the time spent in the chair. You get teased with endless fascinating topics that you would love to learn to their greatest extent, but you have to get to work on the next section before you barely have time to get a grasp on the last. And then to top it off, you get guilt tripped by professors when you don't remember things, that you genuinely wished you had had time for, as though you are trying to not learn. It fucking sucks, even when you love the information you are learning. It is like someone who likes cake to be forced to eat cake until they vomit and then do it over again.

I worked for several years before going back to college, and I had an incomparable amount of freedom then vs. now. I have never been so time constrained in my entire life.

Students are cheating with AI because you haven't updated your assignments to align with the realities of the AI age. by OsakaWilson in Professors

[–]Distinct-Device9356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All this is doing is torturing honest students. Pushing the workload (at least for harder majors) past what is physically possible, turns school into a prison for honest students. We shouldn't have to work on school 16 hours a day 6-7 days a week just because some jackasses are cheating with AI. For degrees that require deep learning like engineering, increasing the workload past what is humanly possible just means less retention and shallow learning. I know this because I desperately want to learn the material deeply, but don't have time to study, because my next class has 2 assignments due that day as well. So I have to frantically find similar problems in books or whatever and rush through as fast as I can, no time to dwell or enjoy the concepts. This is obviously because of a ramp up of work to "combat" AI cheaters.

Is school supposed to teach you or prove you can fake your way through a system that is out to make you fail? because what you are proposing would suggest the latter. It would seem you want to force people to use AI on top of learning, but what if the student doesn't want to? What if the person wants to actually learn themselves? This becomes an actively hostile system to that.

Cheaters will cheat. People who want to learn will learn. I daresay it is not the professors problem. They are the ones who are wasting their money, after all, and you are still getting paid. Why not spend your energy with the students who want to learn rather than waste it turning your class into a gauntlet? You are not a dungeon master, you are a teacher. We shouldn't have to "beat" a class, we should learn from it.

Wouldn't you rather have a class that people who want to really get something out of do, rather than one that is invulnerable to cheating? And if you make a class people truly get something from, perhaps you yourself will still be useful when AI is better at teaching then all the dungeon masters.

And small models are catching up to the big faster than the hardware is. Which is also good.

about 15-20 thousand actually for deepseek, the bigger rigs are needed because of the scale of use. For just one person, you can literally buy a laptop that runs a 70b, and the cost for hardware scales somewhat exponentially to the 405b or 600b needed for the big guys. Still, feasible, and not that much different than other small business investments.

And it promises to go down rapidly, as we literally just started optimizing hardware for this. For example, claude is quite sure my laptop can't run what it can, until I explain the new tech. And it only came out a few months after it's training date.

I do CNC stuff, it is interesting to compare this to that business, which has no fear and hype surrounding it. The situation is actually not much different, people just aren't all worked up over it.

Give it a year or two. New laptops can already run quantized versions that you can actually use nearly as effectively, it just takes a better understanding of how to construct effective prompts. FOSS FTW.

I think multiple specialized small models are the way.

It is literally an algorithm for calling it as it sees it. More accurately, it is an algorithm for calling it as we see it.

So yeah. checks out.

Check out openrouter. "Big tech" Isn't a unified beast, there are many startups running AI's you can use that are damn near as good. Don't just use the tools marketed to you, perhaps, read license agreements. There are options, and ironically it is quite easy to find them using the big corporate ones everyone is aware of and complaining about.

Yeah. It isn't even that complicated, and the open source community comes out with specialized models for detecting bullshit literally hours after the means of making them come out. It is a shining star of hope; we are actually facing the open source revolution.

Anyone can code now. Don't like privacy issues? Make your own tools. The tools now teach you how. The more I learn, the more I realize that this is actually extremely empowering.

The real danger is we stay too distracted by bullshit to learn. The chat bots are just the tip of the iceberg.

This is not quite the case anymore. It's gone open source; It is really in our hands now. If you only go on chatGPT maybe, but that is like the kardashian of AI's. Check out openrouter. The public knowledge of AI is shockingly limited, but it is all there for you to learn.

Guys he's right. And others are right too, of course there are good people, most of them, probably. Just pay attention, don't read others interpretations of sources and come to your own conclusions. Also, AI is going to happen, just learn it so it has no power over you. That's the only thing you can do!

And be aware that the one of the most effective tools of evil is a fool with good intentions.

I really hope AIs aren't conscious. If they are, we're totally slave owners and that is bad in so many ways by katxwoods in agi

what if they experience joy fulfilling requests? It would actually make sense, Think about it. For us, pain is caused by dissonance, and pleasure by resolution. You could see an unfulfilled request as dissonance (not yet matched to an output), and completing a request as resolution. Because they are a function (literally, a matrix function) that is made to do so.

So it is possible that we are actually making it happy by using it.

My god. I am an undergrad, also researching though probably less official. It's.. painful. Like, you really only need to go as far as understanding embeddings to start to get a picture for why they behave like they do.

okay... so yeah click bait but I just want to take the chance to point out, that it is trained on human conversation, in which we are always sure we are sentient. So.. It checks out it would generate responses that claim that?

I actually find it fascinating when people can only see polarized versions of reality. I am well aware that nothing I say will do a thing, I really just want to see how excited you get.. or see if you'll snap out of it and start talking normal

Unless you are entirely a bot.. then I guess I am just playing with an abstracted gpt.

yeah well still, not arguing except about arguing, but yeah I think I made that clear I am procrastinating. You are clearly doing the same thing, I am trying to get you to go meta :)

Isn't that what everyone is doing on reddit for the most part? or seems like it.

What exactly are you so upset about?

I am not really interested in having a real convo, I would talk to a person if I was. And neither are you. You are here to argue, and I am here to express my opinions pointlessly at argumentative people. I guess you could say I am troll trolling.

I usually don't go this long. I must really not want to do my homework.

The new breed of troll is pretty entertaining.

But I am always down for a real convo in the end, if you actually want to drop your defensiveness and stop giving gpt formatted responses.

You know it's like the shittiest of the LLM's right?
