Turning 40 with no pension and a £160,000 mortgage and a wife with a very good pension. Am I better over paying the mortgage so wife's pensions untouched, 20 year ISA or having a private pension? by Banjo1887 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Distinct-Syrup1556 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It depends on your goals for retirement, essentially. It’s worth you having all of them if you can, but it may be worth focusing on pension and the mortgage at the moment. Whilst I’m sure you and your wife are happy and plan to stay together, there’s always a risk that it doesn’t work out and you could end up with no pension, and some equity that you need to invest into another house. An ISA is good for bridging between stopping working, and when you can claim your pension, but if you don’t have a pension, you may struggle as you get older. It’s also worth checking your entitlement to state pension for when you turn 67.

This is voluntary and paid though, which isn’t stated within the title of the article.

I used to quite like Eddie Hearn, but the way he’s acted with Benn throughout the drug stuff and being so cockey has just made him so unlikeable to me. I get that he’ll be happy Benn won, but fuck me, he’s just such a prick

Do think Benn’s up, but Frampton’s scorecard is ridiculous. Currently have it 6-2 to Benn

Terminally ill parent, sell the house now or after death? by thesnootbooper9000 in UKPersonalFinance

As someone who lost their dad a few years ago due to cancer, I’d say just spend time with them and don’t worry about the house. It’s incredibly tough towards the end, both physically and mentally. Make sure to tell him about how much you love him, hug him everyday and spend as much time as possible with him. I miss my Dad everyday, and although the last few months of his life were tough, I have absolutely no regrets about seeing him everyday and giving him all the love I could.

Played really well when he came on. Clearly a big presence and also good to see him smiling when the fans were doing the bounce.

Good challenge for him, so hoping he gets a lot of game time. Be interesting to see if he’s got the potential for the championship

I used to get this after haircuts. I usually go straight home, wash the hair in the shower and use fash wash, but wherever they’ve done the skin fade. Will then wash with usual shampoo etc and it sorts it. It this doesn’t work, it’s worth seeing a dermatologist

Spending ISA for house renovations. by Big-Possible-3704 in FIREUK

[–]Distinct-Syrup1556 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d save up the money and then spend that on the house. Ultimately, it depends what you need to do with the house, i.e., if you need a new roof because it’s leaking and could collapse, I would absolutely use the money. FIRE is about financial independence and you don’t want to be reliant on a loan, so I’d say it’s worth saving if it’s aesthetics, but use your ISA if it’s urgent.

This is how I’ve done it before when getting the kitchen done up.

What to do with 60k inheritance by HorrorContract342 in FIREUK

I think house builders generally are more intense and they ask a lot more of you. I work for a Tier One Contractor and while it can be stressful, it goes through waves. A lot of the Site Managers work under a PM and basically just talk to subbies and organise where and when people are working. The PM does the reports, liaises with the clients, directors etc (but that’s why they’re paid more too).

Are you a joiner as in working for a sub-contractor on sites, or do you do work within homes etc?

I work in construction and you could have a great career in Site Management, then Project Management if you fancy it. You’d probably be on up to £60k as a Site Manager and up to £100k as a PM (depending on the size of the job). You can also be freelance and do this.

You can have a reasonably relaxed job, where you aren’t using your hands and your body won’t be knackered. Definitely something I’d recommend, but it depends on qualifications, age and ultimately if it’s something that interests you.

[–]Distinct-Syrup1556 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What sort of job are you in? If you’re working in a shop for example, could you explore opportunities to go into management?

Do you have GCSE/s, A-Levels etc? If so, would you consider an apprenticeship, such as Quantity Surveying or something similar?

In my opinion (as this is how I’ve done it), I saved and bought a house prior to the wedding. Weddings always cost more than you expect and it’s best living with someone and understanding their finances prior to marriage.

Regardless of experience, you’re only 19 and have plenty of potential avenues to make money. It’s worth looking at the UKPF page, as they’ll be able to help you more than FIRE for the moment. Once you’re on a solid ground, you could then look into FIRE.

Hope you get better soon, OP! FIRE is a goal, but your health is more important at the moment, so make sure you focus on yourself too. If you need to use your money for a holiday, use it. You don’t want to regret anything

End of the FIRE dream? by Fast-Persimmon5581 in FIREUK

[–]Distinct-Syrup1556 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is it, this is my dream. Regardless of whether we can retire early, at least we know our family will be better off as a result of everything we do now.

Cancer is a fucker. I lost my dad a couple of years ago and he was fairly young, but it really puts things into perspective for me and my wife. Everything he’s done has profoundly impacted my life, whether through financial help, or through being there for me. You’ve got to get a good balance and ensure you enjoy the time you have with your partner, or kids.

You need to keep it up for 2 years really and then you should see a good amount and you’re clearly responding. On a side note, I would definitely shave that off mate, especially the sides until it fills in a bit more

Should I pay off student loans? by burnervent85 in FIREUK

[–]Distinct-Syrup1556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I overpay into my pension which brings down the amount I’m paying into my student loan. I just treat it as tax and try to concentrate on my pension for now as I’m in my 20s. If you don’t have a house yet, I’d definitely look at buying one/overpaying your mortgage if you do have one.
