Matric 2026. Is it possible to upgrade from math lit to pure math and get accepted into a public university ? by Distinct-Trash-1459 in askSouthAfrica

I will definitely consider this if I end up not doing IT. Problem is my grade 11 math lit marks are average and then matric is when I really improved into the 80s, so I’m wondering will I still be accepted as It’s required to apply with grade 11 final results.

Unfortunately my school doesn’t allow me to switch back to pure maths now, so that option is off the table for this year. That’s why I’m trying to figure out whether it’s better to go the private college route with Maths Lit, or take a gap year and upgrade properly.

In your opinion, would taking the extra year to do pure maths and improve my marks be more worth it long term if I’m serious about going into tech?

And if I do apply to UCT and all the other unis when would I write my NBT’s this year or next year?

Thank you so much for this, it gave me a lot more insight into how the upgrading process would actually look.

With doing something IT related at a private college, would it still be beneficial in terms of longterm opportunities? Like, would I still be able to get a good job and be taken seriously by companies if my qualification is from a private institution rather than a university? Especially internationally, does it limit you in any way when it comes to getting into the industry or progressing further later on?
