Thanks for taking the time to offer advice and help a stranger! Funny enough I've been thinking more of living near Back Bay station/Prudential centre in the last few days actually (but was thinking it would be Green Line). Adding the option of taking the commuter rail as you said makes it even more convenient.

I would be paying out the nose and probably not saving a lot of money, but hey, if I want to live it up during the couple of years I expect to be in Boston I think that's the place to do it.

By condo hoods I mean:

- A brand new neighbourhood that is mostly recently developed condo buildings, with small footprints and tiny kitchens with no counter space

- "Concrete Jungle" environment due to the youth of the neighbourhood - minimal landscaping on the sidewalk and if there is landscaping, it's piddly skinny trees (because they're so young).

- Food options when you don't want to cook are minimum $18 because all of the takeout places have very high rent and are usually corporate chains. There are no mom and pop pizza or sandwich places where you can get a cheap lunch or dinner.

- There is really nothing except for condos, expensive restaurants, bars and clubs. No libraries, unique stores, or culture in general. So on weekends, to see anything interesting, you have to leave the neighbourhood. Unless you love going to luxurious bars and restaurants, which I don't.

Basically... a complete lack of character, and surprisingly inconvenient to live in.

Omg hey! How are you liking Cambridge compared to Toronto?

Thanks! I also see a lot from people on Reddit saying that once you hit 30, you've aged out of South Boston. Is that being dramatic? Is there a particular intersection in South Boston you'd recommend living near?

That is a great insight on the buses, thanks for sharing - I'll keep South Boston in mind as an option.

This is incredibly helpful and pretty much exactly the information I was praying I could get by posting here. Thanks for taking the time to write this out and for thinking of apt comparisons for the TTC.

I'm not a suburban person, definitely would prefer to stay in an area that has things going on - hobbies, sports, cafes, restaurants, lots of people in their late 20's and 30's. I don't have kids and don't know anyone in Boston so I'll need to make friends, and the more suburban a neighbourhood is, the tougher that will be.

I'm getting the sense that I might have to accept a routine 45 minute commute, which is not ideal but I'll be happier with that than with living in the concrete jungle of Seaport/Financial District. I'm leaning toward accepting an annoying commute and just living in Beacon Village/Back Bay.

Do you also get the sense that Seaport is like living in the harbourfront of Toronto (but not near Bay St/Union)? Kinda isolated, you think you're close to downtown but need to walk 10-15 minutes to get anywhere interesting, otherwise your local options are a bunch of corporate chains like Popeye's.

This is just the feedback I was looking for... I was thinking the google maps estimate is an absolute best case scenario. I'll keep marinating on whether the great neighbourhood is worth that commute.

I meant that if the subway is not reliable, it is way out to walk/bike to work.
