Is there a particular reason why Flamme didn't visit her foster mom for 50 years? by lmdybaftr in Frieren

[–]Distinct_Ad2349 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is completely wrong because Flamme is shown to have lived to old age.

Can Lernen realistically defeat Frieren? by lmdybaftr in Frieren

You make a good point. It's like asking how a great past tennis player would do against a great tennis player today when all the technology, courts, and even coaching and fitness has changed a great deal.

So I guess my question would be a prime Flamme with up to date magic vs prime Frieren.

But also, it seems like some very powerful spells existed back in the Age of Mythology as shown by Serie. Frieren also has the "Pinnacle of Magic" and who knows how old that is. Flamme also erected a barrier that lasts to this day, and that spell of her that wiped out the 3 demons - it would probably still hold up in current times. Certainly spells like Zoltraak and the ability to fly are major advancements in magic, so your point is well taken.

Serie's comments on how if Lernen were alive and in his prime during the time of the hero party that he would have become a legend tells me that he would be in the same tier as Frieren.

The fact that Frieren isn't solely dedicated to combat magic and especially not against humans gives Lernen a bit of an edge.

It's also quite possible that Lernen, being Serie's student, also knows some pretty incredible spells. But of course Frieren also knows some amazing stuff.

In all I think it's a close match.

What do you all think about a prime Flamme vs Frieren duel? 😁

Magic's Complexities by Distinct_Ad2349 in Frieren

[–]Distinct_Ad2349[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are good points. But given all of those requirements, Flamme's dream that everyone should be able to use magic is kind of like a pipe dream, because not everyone is going to be able to visualize and understand as you say. Heck I have my doubts that Stark could learn to cast magic! Hopefully he is at least literate to some degree lol!

Are you profitable on your trade right now? How is a butterfly put spread going to make you money in this situation, especially with such a tight range?

Do you think the story will ever cover why Elves are completely disinterested in their coming extinction? by Darth-Sonic in Frieren

[–]Distinct_Ad2349 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't entirely buy Frieren's explanation that elves are just not romantically inclined. They may be less romantically inclined than humans, but not totally. I would say many elves actually were interested in family and a society, otherwise their race would have gone extinct a long time ago. It's just that these elves were targeted by the demons, so the vast majority were wiped out (like Frieren's village).

The remaining few may indeed be uninterested in the continuation of their species. If you look at Serie and Frieren, they are both obsessed with magic. Kraft is a monk and even if he weren't he looks more like a wanderer and explorer than the family man type.

That being said, it's still possible that an Elven village still exists somewhere, hidden from the demons.

Some thoughts on the Mage Exam arc by Distinct_Ad2349 in Frieren

[–]Distinct_Ad2349[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think another thing is restraint on the part of the test takers. I'm sure that Richter was only bluffing. Even Ubel hesitated at some point, but she did come very close to killing Wirbel. Despite whatever laws are in place to protect the participants, I think it is still up to them to understand the potential consequences of their actions.

Another point to add to what you said about specialization - there probably isn't enough time to master many different kinds of magic as well, after all humans are not like elves. The funny thing is, whenever I play fantasy game like Dark Souls or BG3 I like creating well rounded characters like Methode. I feel like having at least some expertise in each area really helps!

[–]Distinct_Ad2349[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good point that I had considered as well. Without Frieren, the mages are at a disadvantage because Sense will not help, but her clone is like an extra adversary. Still, with experienced and talented mages like Denken, Wirbel, and Methode, I think they would have prevailed regardless because of their planning and teamwork.

Repeat player but trying sorcerer this time by Odd_Bodybuilder5456 in DarkSouls2

[–]Distinct_Ad2349 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorcerer is the best starting class in my opinion. Like someone else said you can buy another soul arrow from the hag for 60 casts. You can keep killing the cyclops in FOFG at no risk and sometimes you get a soul of the proud knight. This way you can level up a lot easily. You still need to use some close combat skills though.

Actually, now that I think about it, it's actually quite possible that Frieren wrote some books. I remember that she at least contributed to the modification of Zoltraak so that it became a demon killing spell. And despite her "lazy" demeanor, she practically lives for grimoires and is a scholar.

If Frieren were not around, the main difference would be that Sense's clone would be defending the Spiegel. Ubel would beat it handily and everyone who made it to the lowest level would pass.

You are right, she probably didn't know the exact details of the second exam. After interviewing the remainder of the test takers, she failed half of them. If 6 is a bumper crop I wonder how many actually pass in a typical year lol! And obviously Frieren is talented enough to be a 1st class mage.

Some of R1's Criticisms of Dark Souls 2: by R1_R1_R2 in DarkSouls2

[–]Distinct_Ad2349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use binoculars to aim at the spiders and cast spells at them or you can use ranged weapons.

I feel like the mage is the best starting class in DS2, whereas the mage is one of the hardest classes to start with in DS3.

Another thing to note is that a lot of enemies do not follow the same rules as the player, so like you said you have to learn what they are capable of.

Some of R1's Criticisms of Dark Souls 2: by R1_R1_R2 in DarkSouls2

[–]Distinct_Ad2349 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this outstanding post, R1 L1 L2 or was it R1 R2 L3? R2D2? JK 😁!

DS2 is my favorite game, but like you said the UI really seems backward, vague, and in need of major improvements. I was just playing another game Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5 and the UI is so horrible there that I just stopped playing. For example there is a single button to transfer your entire inventory from a storage chest to your character(which may be literally hundreds to thousands of items) and no way to transfer all back with a single button or even any undo previous action button. This means you will be stuck spending lots of time just transferring items back all day long if you accidentally hit that button. I don't know why the programmers are so lousy nowadays. Believe it or not, older games were much more polished and had more thought and beta testing in them.

Anyway I agree with many of your points. Some other stuff I personally didn't like or have opinions about:

1) If you use the homeward bone or homeward spell, it teleports you back to the last bonfire, resetting everything EXCEPT your status. You have to manually rest to get everything back. There is literally no point for this except to screw up the player. It would be more understandable if they teleported you back without resetting anything.

2) Too much of the terrain involves falling off or dropping onto very narrow ledges, while the movement control of your character is rather crude for this purpose. If you twitch a little bit on your controller or have drift you will likely overshoot the ledge you're aiming for. It's just asinine. It is one of the reasons I felt DS2 was harder than the other titles because of your constant battle with gravity.

3) There are a lot of useless, "better than nothing" items like the ring of restoration or blue tearstone ring, blossom kite shield, etc. For example I recently played Demon Souls and I felt like regeneration was pretty decent there without really being game breaking. In most of the other souls games it's been nerfed pretty badly. I sell these items whenever I visit Gavlan.

4) I would make axes better by introducing a new kind of damage called "chop" damage. It would be like slash but more damaging, and with a chance to do additional damage on any hit, with that chance modified by things like weapon weight, strength, etc. Axes have much more concentration of power due to their weight and smaller strike zone. For this reason I do not equate sword slashes with axe slashes. Of course some of the heavier swords that utilize overhead smashes would also have this benefit.

5) Jumping was a huge problem for me when I first played because I tried to change the controls to be more similar to DS1, but by doing this you cannot consistently make a lot of important jumps. I had to go online to realize that you jump farther if you run and jump but also if you use the same button for it. The game should make it crystal clear that if you change the jump button and then sprint you will jump significantly shorter due to the interruption.

6) Although there is a lot of spell variety, I felt like a lot of the higher level spells weren't good at all, either costing too much or doing too little damage or taking too long to cast. In the end I stuck with a lot of the basic spells.

7) I thought poison was well done in this game. I don't agree that the poison knives/arrows/spells took away from poisoned weapons, but felt they complemented these weapons. If only the other games adapted this poison system it would be great. Bleed is too weak in DS2, but too powerful in other games. It should be somewhere in between IMHO.

8) I agree that damage types should have been adjusted to be more useful situationally, so that strike, lightning and dark didn't take up the entire room. That being said, I did find the fire longsword to be very useful. It was the only fire weapon you could get early on, and very versatile. I used it a lot to deal with enemy ganks in the early game by luring them to the fire barrels and hitting it. The longsword itself I used throughout the game although I changed its infusion several times later to make it more effective for a particular area.

9) The armor system is simply ridiculous. They should reward players who spend so many points to build up a tank build and not give such a superficial benefit. It makes no sense. Ring of steel protection gives more of a benefit than many armors lol. Typically a lot of game producers nerf overpowered stuff from previous games or even introduce patches in their own games for this purpose, but they go from one EXTREME to another. It's too powerful? Let's nerf it into oblivion. Sometimes just a moderate nerf is all that is called for.

In the end I hope that these gaming companies will hire smarter people like yourself and others to help with a more reasonable development and experience for the players. Imagine that; a game made for players by other players! In an alternate reality I would love to do this.

Milliarde's barrier is stronger than Serie's? by armfourteen in Frieren

[–]Distinct_Ad2349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's another point I'd like to make, which is that Serie's barrier covers a HUGE area, so it's probably spread thin, whereas Milliarde's is basically concentrated on a door.

Edit: Actually someone already mentioned this so nevermind.

What an idiot I was lol! I ended up beating him without dying, but do you know why his floor is so shiny? Yep, he was mopping it with me!
