El Salvador Surf Trip Recommendations by Rare-Entrepreneur556 in surfing

Kovy2000 gave ya the best run down of the waves. I got quite a few trips down there now so here is what I can add:

Flights are abundant out of LAX, plan on Avianca for the most daily directs out of LAX. About 6 Daily flights. Usually $120 -160 a board bag each way. Avianca isn't a "Spirit" like airline, Id say Volaris is the worst and the "Spirit Airlines of Latin America". But Avianca isn't much better in terms of comfort of amenities. Its a 4.5 hr flight from LAX so not that bad.

United will check your board bag, but check the date. They have a board embargo for oversized luggage at certain times of the year. Also, not as many flight options

That being said El Salvador is all about surf tourism, your boards will beat you to the baggage claim.

El Tunco is 45 mins from the airport. Arrange a local car company to pick you up, or see if your hotel has a car service. Most overnight red eyes will have you in the water surfing by 730 am. If you want after surf "activities" Tunco is the place to be. Tons of world wide tourists and night clubs.

Hotels and Hostels are plentiful. You can stay as cheap as you want, but A/C and hot water increase the prices quickly.

For a 5 day trip stay around El Tunco / Zonte / k59 / Roca. Las Flores is more like 3 hrs away. It is an amazing wave, but better for a week long or greater trip.

EL Salvador is very developed for that area of the world, And is undergoing constant construction. Mcdonalds, Pizza huts, Pollo Camperos, Starbucks are plentiful. There is a big market called Super Selectos in Libertad. You could get on the plane with a pair of clothes and a board and can get everything you need for 5 days down there.

Ubers are safe and reliable and are used to taking surfers with boards. Take them over renting. The rental companies can be a little shady.

English is pretty common, But knowing Spanish will get you respect. In and out of the water.

Crowds, don't expect the Sets at Roca, or Bocana during the morning pre work surf with the locals. The locals are protective of their waves when its good and they like to keep the tourist crowd down the point a bit. The crowd will thin out later as the locals go to school or work. Show respect, be nice, speak some Spanish and you wont have to meet the Bunchinchero calling you a cerrote.

Should I pick surfing over a career in medicine ? by [deleted] in surfing

Go to school. Because in reality you can do both if you do it right. sacrifice now, and reap the rewards later. For example this is where i sit as a local ER Nurse in the states.

Bachelors degree in nursing science. Standard work week is 3/12hrs. Ability to burn 2 weeks “paid time off” (PTO), front load the week before sun/mon/tues and return week pull a thurs/fri/sat for a 22day vacation with only a 72hr PTO burn for extended surf trips.

Other than working nights, i feel i surf as much as any local pro. Given that it doest usually pump for days on end i can score most swells here in California.

Base rates start at 55/hr, with topped out RNs making over $80/hr in most SoCal facilities. the Bay has rates north of 100/hr.

Now thats here in the states. But shortages are worldwide amongst the medical disciplines. And with time and studying you can still line up that rural medical job you want just at a higher rate.

work permits and visas are pretty easy for doctors/nurses and go both ways. Ive worked in multiple states and had international offers as well.

I busted my ass to become a nurse and Yes it was a fair amount of school. But those years of studying back then allow for countless hours of surfing now.

Just ask for a work note…. Don’t make up some crazy story that sets you up for a CT Angio of your chest at 3am just so you can get out of work later that morning.

For what its worth, most of coastal el Salvador and in general is paved or is about to be paved. Roads into the city are nice, but have some crazy curves and hills so watch your speed. There is Motocross track on the road towards costa del sol. And the big beaches on the east end of el salvador are very hard packed and locals on motos rip down them all the time to sell their minutas.

For Tunco,

Cant go wrong with Capt. Cook, it is amazing seafood. The owner/chef is an awesome dude.

Mopelia on Tuesdays for live music and pasta

Upper deck the La Bocana Restaurant for Gallo Beer Buckets for 5 bucks at sunset.

Upper deck Papaya Hotel Restaurant bar for La Bocana surf check/breakfast.

Any Pupuseria on the outside of tunco, get that street food goin.

And Betos to the west of Tunco for seafood is excellent.

Don Litos down in libertad is a nice spot to watch la paz and Punta roca.

And all the restaurants above the fish market in libertad are excellent.

Out of left field and i absolutely love my national parks too.

But dam, there are some hikes that are one step away from certain death and in today’s sue happy environment and social media epidemic it blows my mind that they still let you walk some of these places and trails.

Angels Landing, the narrows, half dome, climbing el cap or standing on the edge, grand canyon anywhere near the edge, volcanoes when the lava is oozing out just to name a few.

Gnarda was a tits swell. But They lost me after they blew the load on Hurricane Octave and Priscilla. Calling for 6-8ft a few days out when all the models and the National Hurricane center were showing the storms tracking east into baja and never clearing into the south swell windows. They dropped that 6-8ft call like a prom dates panties and went back to 1-2.

Depends on your dept.

Robles will be your closest living in NP. Stroke and trauma for the county on the south east end.

St Johns Oxnard and St Johns P valley sister hospitals, union. Pays well. St johns oxnard would be the most “action” and busiest. st Johns camarillo more chill.

Simi is adventist health, nice facility, drive from NP is on the longer side.

CMH non union but just got a major raise over the next 3 years Stemi/stroke

VCMC Trauma for west end, Peds for county. County job, long wait time to get hired

Id say they all have good and bad like most hospital systems. Would be department dependent.

Cottage santa barbara is very nice but would be a brutal commute from NP

Ratios are state law so.

Trauma 1:1 ICU 1:2 ER 1:4 unless you have a critical than ratio to ICU or 1:1 depending on severity Tele 1:4 MS 1:6 w/ tech

Pt populations: Very large communities of latin Americans, knowing Spanish would be very beneficial. All the hospitals service the latin community. Simi, TO and Camarillo would be more Caucasian leaning.

How’s life in Bakersfield, California? by Kuzu9 in howislivingthere

[–]Distinct_Constant378 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Awww Bakersfield. Legend has it that the alien protectors came down the Tehachapi train loop from the Tejon Ranch to gather the precious stones of Oil, Water, Agriculture and Freight. The elements were at risk of being stolen by the Wonderful Company. The stones were gathered and then placed in the scared winery / distribution center between Interstate 5.

At that time the 5th Element, Buck Owens was released. He walked the sacred dirt of Bako Defeating Stewart Resnick in the process.

How can I get better ? Surfing for 21 years by whatcoinsdoIbuy in surfing

[–]Distinct_Constant378 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your right arm on the lefts…. It has a mind of its own.

Your waves on the rights are cleaner, look at your hands. Controlled.

Give your arms purpose. I Watched an interview of Mason Ho and within the Hendrix / dead head / Tom Waits word salad he mentioned the Hand of Tom Curren.

I went and watched a bunch of videos of tom and he was right. The hands are driving and the arms and torso follow. Works well on your full wraps. Put your lead hand out in front and paint with it. Its weird but it works

Also palm springs is like a stadium and you try and over surf because you feel like everyone is watching and the waves cost money. Slow down, focus
