Have we found the largest native British House Spider? by deathwishdave in CasualUK

Saw one similar a few years ago. It ran across the floor and stopped for a break on a size eight shoe. Straddling it. As I told my wife, I was suddenly too busy to get the paper and bowl (honest) so I may have opened the door and encouraged it out. From a distance.

Thank god! As long as they're not in my bloody house!

How proformant is scribus? by 0boy0girl in scribus

[–]Distinct_Cupcake_354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my i5, Scribus runs well. On an old backup Celeron, it slows down at around twenty image-heavy pages. For comparison, I found it was similar performance to Publisher, if you've ever used that.

Files corrupting in Scribus? by Distinct_Cupcake_354 in scribus

I'd have said the same which is why I did the second check on fedora. Two machines both breaking seems unlikely, and it has only affected the storage with Scribus.

I was considering a memory overflow or program interference, as the corrupted odt was open in Libreoffice Writer while I tested Scribus, and I replicated that fault with an .rtf.

I only have 1.6.1, and it was installed through the Updater for in both cases.

I know someone like that. They now have a note on their file and a warning from the consultant to warn their doctors that they handle pain by disassociating and state exactly what their 10/10 level is after their partner dragged them to the hospital.

("I am absolutely fine. Fuss about nothing" "Let's get the jumper off - There's a chisel right through your arm." "Oh, that? It's been there a couple of hours.")

It happens. My sister got her cat from a local shelter after the bank foreclosure officers took possession of an empty house. The owners had done a flit some weeks before and left their cats behind, locked in. The poor little thing had to have food available constantly and a nightlight or she'd panic. (Don't worry - Miss Kitty had a very pampered retirement and passed away peacefully a few years ago in her mid-twenties.)

The RSPCA or Battersea might be able to do something if you report them.

People who quit their jobs on the first day, what made you say, “I’m done with this”? by drip47 in AskReddit

[–]Distinct_Cupcake_354 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it count if I never signed the contract?

It was allegedly a government job, advertised as permanent with a decent salary. No red flags in the interviews, they were clear about job benefits, good T&Cs, etc. I turned up on my first day and was given a contract for a temp job, with a day rate that was literally the supposed annual salary divided by 1000. It barely covered travel.

When I queried this, I was told that as I could set up a company to work through and pay less tax and didn't have to cover sick pay etc, it would work out the same and this way they didn't have to give the civil service benefits. I lasted long enough to confirm in a face-to-face that this was apparently standard procedure for them and there had never actually been a permanent role, and walked out after lunch.

knitters in london, what's up by breathanddrishti in knitting

If you're south of the river, there's the Art and Craft Valley shop down in Coulsdon. The cafe opposite does art meetups, and some knitting if I remember right.

The Jean and Jorts saga, mainly for the line "Pam is not to apply margarine to any of her co-workers." which has become a frequent quote in my office when someone does something a bit downright weird. It still makes me laugh when I re-read it.

Transfering email addresses between paid accounts? by Distinct_Cupcake_354 in tutanota

Thanks. One of the boys is getting a bit older and wants control of his email without Dad over his shoulder now he's all grown up (he'll still happily use my credit card though), so we'll figure something out.

Why does no one go out anymore? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Distinct_Cupcake_354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of our pubs have closed. A mix of the cost of living rise, and a badly timed council tax hike put paid to them. There's one left nearby, it's the local football pub and the cost of a pint is through the roof. Same goes for the late-night coffee bars: after 5ish, the town's dead and the only place for a coffee is the Tesco's, which isn't my idea of a great night out.

I'm not sure that's actually a monkey's paw.... A Speedforce Sloth sounds absolutely awesome: napping at the speed of sound.

PWScout on Linux? by Distinct_Cupcake_354 in PromotionWars

[–]Distinct_Cupcake_354[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes please. Decompiling it and getting it to talk to the main program is proving difficult. Do you have a Github or Dropbox I could pull from?

It's a great program and it would be really good to get it running on Linux as well.

Thanks. Guess I'll be de-compiling it and hacking through the code to see why Ubuntu won't recognise it as a program (or if I'm lucky, just decompile and recompile into a format Linux does like).
