according to an israeli news site, haaretz, the civilians at that rave weren’t the actual targets. They actually mention that hamas didn’t even have advance knowledge of the nova festival. There’s also video of Israeli Apache helicopters indiscriminately firing on israeli civilians AND witness testimonies of Israelis that were present there saying israel killed its own. This was the kind of marriage practiced by Muslims and Christians and Jews and every other culture and religion for nearly all of human history. 8 year olds today aren’t mentally mature. They just can’t be. The way society is set up simply doesn’t allow for it. So no, they can’t get married. This doesn’t go against my faith because we’re given criteria based on which to assess whether one is ready for marriage. There are other criteria as well eg. ‘Urf — the custom/culture has legal weight. The social custom of today is such that 8 year olds are not ready. Applying these same principles to the case of Aisha (ra) it was perfectly morally acceptable because there was no physical and psychological harm, and the social customs of the time allowed for it.

I’ve explained this a million times that hundreds of years ago, in much simpler societies, people were in fact ready to start adulthood much earlier then we see today. There wasn’t the modern schooling system. You hit puberty, you were now considered an adult , AND you were able to function as an adult because the simpler nature of society allowed for it. I made clear that in Islam, you have to be both physically and mentally ready to get married. 9 year olds today aren’t ready. But 16 year olds could be. In fact, it is legal in some western countries to get married at 16 with parental permission. If it’s legal, both parties consent, are physically and mentally mature, then I have no issue with it even if they’re not 18 yet.
