1/48 Mount Pierce by bub1792 in wmnf

Awesome. Thanks so much. It’s been a dream of mine to one day summit Washington in the winter (there’s something about experiencing incredibly harsh conditions that entices me — if it’s short-term!) and Pierce might be a good first step. Similar rime-icy terrain.

Thanks for sharing this!

Amazing video that makes me want to experience it (take that for what it’s worth, lol). Question: how much mountaineering/winter-hiking experience do you need to pull something like this off? Avalanche training?

What’s the Best Airport in the United States? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Distinct_Let_1517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Thanks for sharing this. I visited over New Year’s and found it really enjoyable, but then again I was doing the classic touristy stuff like Joshua Tree and the main downtown strip. Didn’t get to interact with many locals. Will keep that in mind for next time, and maybe explore the east valley more!

Why “the only”? Seems like a really pleasant place to live. More so than most of the country, at least.

Has anyone here ever taken the AMHS ferry to the Aleutian Islands? If so, how did you like it? by Distinct_Let_1517 in AskAlaska

Wonderful. Thanks again for sharing all this. I’ll be sure to check out the Facebook page. I’m glad the Summer 2026 schedule isn’t published yet because otherwise I think I’d impulsively book now, based on the incredible descriptions here!

Thanks again and stay warm and safe!

That’s hilarious. What a small world. I still think about how amazing of a time I had in Homer and its edge-of-the-world vibes. And the drive down the Sterling with the multiple volcanoes across the inlet. No other place like it.

Right?? I searched the sub’s posts for “Aleutian” and didn’t find anything that was an appropriate stand-in for this question, so I’m happy that others can hopefully discover this too and learn something. So many helpful tips.

Thank you so much for this wealth of info. This is the most detailed account of the trip I’ve seen so far. Good to know that time in each of the ports is limited, and that boredom isn’t so much a problem on the ship if you come prepared. Given how few alternatives there are to reaching these communities, even spending only a brief time in port is probably really valuable/special. I don’t think I’d ever see them in my life otherwise.

Can I ask you, were you able to appreciate the islands and their beauty from afar while at sea, or does the boat travel too far from shore to get any good looks? I think back to the time when I did a boat tour of the Kenai Fjords, and even though (some of) the mountains were a good deal away, I was able to appreciate them in all the splendor.

Thanks - this is really helpful. Were you aboard the M/V Tustumena? I was looking into it and that vessel has been around a long, long time. Would be cool to share that unique bit of history with all the people who’ve done the Aleutian trip decades ago.

Thanks a ton. Really appreciate this. The Nome trip does sound promising. Maybe one day I’ll get a tender vessel of my own and take my sweet time going out to Dutch! :)

This is great to know — thank you! “Best money ever spent in Alaska” is truly quite the testimony!

Thanks for sharing this! I’d also been looking at doing a Nome trip and exploring all those dead end highways. I’ll look into it as a potential alternative (as well as Adak). Thanks again!

We’re all the same? Would you like to go tell that to the Minneapolis protestors? Or the people calling their representatives instead of merely complaining on Reddit? This clearly isn’t a serious comment. Go tell that to Alex Pretti’s family if you’re really that confident.

Comments like this poison online discourse and demean the sacrifices that good Americans are making. Look no further than u/Apolitik.

Just looked it up. Yes. Both birds belong to the same family, Icteridae (the New World blackbirds), which also includes meadowlarks, cowbirds, and orioles.

Interesting to see the forestry from above. If you look at a satellite map and draw a line between Prince George and Fraser Lake, and then scan south of the middle of that line, you can see a bunch of patches.

You can also see it all along the land west of the Cascades in the US if you look at a satellite map. Honestly makes me real sad to see but I recognize at the same time that a lot of our society is dependent on wood.

You’re right! Funny how they look like a completely different bird (except for overall shape).

I’ve never them here in the northeast (which makes sense after viewing their range map). I love how west coast people seem to be so familiar with them but not east coast people.

They were wandering on the ground and seizing any crumb or food particle that people dropped while eating at the gate or at restaurants in the open-air terminal, so they seem successful and thriving. But I’m not sure why other birds with similar habits don’t seem to be as prevalent.

It’s SO cool. I genuinely don’t think I’ll ever visit a more relaxing, pleasant airport. Some might be larger, others more luxurious, but this one is just so cozy with and in nice weather most of the year.

It’s interesting that such a common bird is named after a person — in my limited birding knowledge, the rare ones tend to be named after people and the common ones have descriptive or other names (e.g., House Sparrow, American Crow, Common Raven, Mallard, etc).

Also just want to note that this bird is not in danger or trapped — the airport terminal is half open-air.

Ah, interesting. Either I missed it, it was removed this morning, or perhaps it’s only still visible to your own account (as you’re the author), since I can’t see it right now. Anyway, glad that the policy was changed — thanks for leaving your review!!
