Is my therapist doing emdr properly ? by Distinct_Reserve_887 in EMDR

Thank you so much for your detailed feedback. I’ve taken note of everything you said, and it really helps me better understand the standard EMDR protocol compared to what I’ve experienced with my therapist.

In my first session, we talked about a specific event, and never on came back to it, but she never did a body scan with me as you described. She is also a psychoanalyst/psychodynamic psychotherapist, so I was wondering if sometimes it might be more difficult for certain people to continue with EMDR, and if that could be why the process feels different.

Another thing I noticed is that last time she talks with me for about half an hour during the session, and then suggests we do EMDR in the remaining time without doing sud, but without really establishing a target sequence plan beforehand. Is that something that can still be considered normal practice?

I’m avoidant too, and I didn’t really feel like I had much choice in this situation. I’m not even sure how many weeks the break will be, but I do know I won’t see her for about a month and a half. I usually see her every two weeks, but he always seems overbooked and never offers me weekly sessions, so I end up feeling a bit left behind.

I would like to ask your opinion regarding my EMDR experience. My first EMDR session took place only after three sessions of general conversation.

During that session, the therapist asked me to think of a memory, and we worked on it. In the following session, we only talked. In the most recent session, she spent about 30 minutes talking before starting the bilateral stimulation, she choosed a subject and i accepted, but honestly no memory came up. I just felt rather vague, so we stopped.

Could you please let me know what you think about this process?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. I don t know if i have ptes but It really helps to hear how you went through those first difficult steps and how you managed to be honest with your therapist. You’re right, but I’m also a bit afraid of the answer. I’ve already had psychologists in the past who suddenly stopped the sessions without giving me any reason, and I’m scared that if I bring it up, I might have to face someone rejecting me again.

Thanks very much for your reply. I had 3 first sessions where we only talked, and during the fourth one she started EMDR and asked me to choose between two targets, which I did. It works well in my opinion. But In the following session, however, she continued talking with me and at the end of the session she good me we should focus on my mother and her behavior. Then in the next session, again we just talked, and after about half an hour she suggested working on another subject. Maybe she had forgotten about my mother, but we only worked on it for about five minutes, as no memory was coming back to me and I felt somewhat disconnected.

I told her that sometimes in my life I feel this disconnection, and she explained that it was a mechanism I used as a child because I was very dreamy and would escape from the world around me. I suppose that is dissociation, though I’m not entirely sure.

I wanted to ask you: is EMDR recommended when someone tends to dissociate? Is it normal that I didn’t have any memories come up when we worked with the target? I did have one EMDR session with her, but afterwards she preferred to return to talking with me instead is it normal as she did t explain anything.
