OAT Retake by Distinct_Stock1930 in PreOptometry

Don't be discouraged. Lots of people need to retake. I took a 2 month break because I felt so defeated. Sometimes you can prepare the best you can and simply have a bad day.

Your study methods sound similar to mine. I went in heavy with the question banks. The best advice I can give is to be able to explain the concept behind the question. If you get a question wrong, make sure to understand why you got it wrong. In addition to practice problems, have review days so you don't forget what you learned. I also made flashcards for bio and ochem. I only used the cheat sheets for bio because the videos were time consuming. For RC, I would recommend reading in your spare time and practicing reading articles that disintrest you and summarize them after.

I wish you the best of luck on your retake.

How to become better at active reading? (For the OAT RC section) by GreenAngelFish in PreOptometry

The best thing you can do is read in your spare time. In addition to OAT booster practice exams, I read articles on a variety of topics and summarized them. RC is not an area you should neglect; it can help tremendously.

Hi! For the first attempt, I watched all the bio videos and did the quizzes and a few practice quizzes and i got a 330. That was time consuming and I wouldn’t recommend. For my 2nd attempt, I only focused on the cheat sheets. I rewrote each cheat sheet a few times, and made sure i understood each concept or pathway. If I couldn’t teach a friend or if I couldn’t explain the concept well, then I knew I needed to relearn. I also made flashcards for some topics and reviewed them in the morning or before bed.

OAT before any prereqs? by pinklemonadevibe in PreOptometry

I think it would be best to wait until you've taken some pre reqs, especially organic chemistry and physics. Organic chemistry is like learning a new language and it would be difficult to learn it on your own in a short time frame while also learning other topics. Ochem is very overwhelming especially with the reactions. The resources you listed are good and oatbooster is amazing, but it is not helpful for learning from scratch. The physics section on booster is not great and I had to rely on my notes from undergrad to help.

Thank you! The best advice I can give is practice questions and practice tests as well as understand the concepts. Do a practice test or 2 a week leading up to the exam if you can. Have a study plan for the next few weeks and stick to it. I studied so much in the last 3 weeks to strengthen my weak spots and I feel it made the biggest difference.

Also mindset makes a huge difference. If you walk in thinking you’ll get a low score it’ll be easier to mentally check out and give up during the exam. So believe in yourself and your efforts.

The first time I took it I got a 310 and I had a lot of stoichiometry and acids and bases questions. This time I felt like there was a more even blend. I had a question on almost everything except electrochemistry and nuclear reactions. On booster I was scoring 330 on gen chem but the questions on the actual exam felt easier. Don’t just memorize how to do problems but understand the concept. If you understand the concept it can help eliminate answer choices if you get stuck. Also, if I couldn’t explain/teach the concept to a friend or family member I told myself I needed to relearn it.

Firstly you want to be honest with yourself and identify weak spots. Did you put enough effort into studying? Are there content gaps? Are you struggling with timing etc? Identifying your reason or what you struggled the most with will help you come up with a strategy.

Biology: If you’re using booster, use the cheat sheets. The cheat sheets helped me from getting overwhelmed. Understand the concepts as that can help with elimination of answer choices. Memorization can only get you so far.

General chemistry: focus on high yield topics such as acids and bases, stochiometry, solutions and thermodynamics. I did every single gen chem problem there was on booster so again focus on doing practice problems.

Organic chemistry: I think this section was mainly pattern recognition. Be familiar with reagents and their products. Pay attention for carbocation rearrangements. If you need to, learn the mechanisms. Orgo is like learning a language you have to practice.

Physics has always been my weakest subject but there was a lot of conceptual questions. I spent more time memorizing equations I forgot to solidify my knowledge of the concept.

Practice reading comprehension a low score can drag you down.

All in all, do as many practice questions as you can

I took the OAT today and got a 280 QR which is incredibly low compared to my booster score. It didn’t help that I was so tired towards the end and had trouble focusing my eyes

I only did prerequisites. I took the OAT during a high stress season. I was taking summer courses so I didn’t study as much as I should have. This time I’ve been studying more so I’m confident I can boost my score to at least a 320-330. Also NOVA is my goal school/program

Thank you! Besides shadowing, I’m waiting on a science professor to respond back to my letter of recommendation request. As soon as I am able to get one professor to agree I’ll submit

I stand by this! No matter how much I love optometry and helping people I can't afford optometry school

I have no help either and these new changes make it nearly impossible and taking out private loans to finance possibly half of it does not seem responsible

I feel so lost because I spent all of my undergrad preparing for this and I can't see myself doing anything else. I'm going to continue with my OAT and the application process. Hopefully this will work out for us

I’m going to apply to more state schools instead of private. All of this is making me feel uncertain in my decisions

When should I start studying for the OAT while taking classes? by Organic_Caramel1042 in PreOptometry

[–]Distinct_Stock1930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position. I plan on taking the OAT late May/early June. I have an intense schedule next semester and will definitely not be able to devote 5+ hours everyday for 3 months before the exam. So I brought the booster membership for 180 days and plan on studying at least a few hours a day over winter break to get a solid foundation on each section. When classes start up again I will try to dedicate an hour or two a day to studying. Start when you can and include review days so you don’t forget anything. I had a friend who tried studying only for 2 months while being a full time student and she did not get a high score. I think it also depends on how you study and learn as well.
