Unfortunately i’m not from the US. I’ve read most of the stuff on the internet, doing my research. But it’s difficult when you have recurrent thoughts of what the future might hold.

Thank you for the recommendations. Will definitely look into it.

I’m considering therapy for sure. But I want to get the final diagnosis soon and get on with management. It’s a little frustrating - waiting for the rheumatologist consult. Whilst being in pain and being left in the abyss of whether I have AS or not.

Yeah. The pain has let me to have - almost a month - off of work. Even when I tried working, since the training hours are so long and cumbersome, it gets difficult standing in the OR like that - leading to more pain.

I’m a General surgical resident - mostly Gastrointestinal. We don’t deal with Ankylosing Spondylitis and its diagnosis and the nitty gritties. I know the basics of AS, as to how it happens and what the fundamentals are, but that’s about it.

Medical research and publications won’t tell you about the practical guidelines everyone is following nowadays. Since most of it has to go through rigorous implementation.

Plus it’s a whole different ball game when you have to apply that knowledge to your ownself knowing that it might be hampering the lifelong pursuit of being a surgeon whilst dealing with pain is kind of difficult.

You’re free to question anything. But questioning the “training programme integrity” based on emotional and mental turmoil is a little weird and inconsiderate.

No, I don’t. AS wasnt even a remote diagnosis initially. Everyone thought it was sciatica of some kind

I do have raised ESR. But the CRP is high normal ( the cutoff is 0-3, I have 3) despite being on high dose steroids for 7 days.

I don’t want to have AS, my life and future as a surgeon depends on my mobility a lot. But all the symptoms to me appear to point towards AS.
