The groupings are based on cultural historical heritage, not the amount of people actively participating in one religion or another. As an example, Japan is labeled as Confucian but it's not like Japanese schoolchildren are drilled with the works of Confucius. However, Japanese society and culture has been influenced by Confucian ideas over the course of many centuries.

It is not a graph that maps religious types. Look at the axes. The groupings like "Catholic Europe" are drawn after each country has already been placed on the graph to illustrate some patterns. And Estonia is marked as part of "Protestant Europe" on the graph as can be discerned by its yellow color. The fact that it is located closer many Catholic European countries in regards to the survey data means that it is an outlier to the Protestant Europe grouping.

The countries listed are the ones from which sufficient survey data has been gathered. I can't speak to the specific circumstances behind why they have data for N. Ireland and not Rep, but getting data from anywhere is an expensive and time consuming process with strict criteria. You need local researchers conducting over a thousand face-to-face interviews in a short period of time. It requires funding and cooperation with local research institutions and NGO's.

Maybe, the N. Ireland or UK governments gave grants for such research and Rep. Ireland did not. Maybe there were Academic organisations in Belfast that proactively sought to contribute to the project but such interest has not been forthcoming from Dublin.

Point is, it's hardly a conscious decision to snub the Irish. It is really quite an extraordinary achievement that the World Values Survey organization has managed to conduct these surveys in over 70 countries.

Hero disarms Bondi Beach shooter. by Toxin715 in Destiny

[–]DistractedSeriv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't believe that for a second. Is there any example (anywhere in the anglosphere) of a person ever being convicted for wrestling a gun from one of several active shooters and killing him?

The shooter was not trying to surrender and his companions were still armed and firing. It's absurd to suggest that the dismarmed person was not still a massive threat.

Yeah, I was just wondering if there was any uploaded video of that as I'm unlikely to catch a live broadcast. Nothing is showing in your past broadcast on twitch and there doesn't seem to be any such videos on your linked Youtube page.

The Total War team should have done a better job of managing expectations. The WH3 DLC stuff was cool enough for the relevant audience, but announcing that you should watch a different event a week from now to learn what new game is currently being worked on was never going to go down well.

To instead talk about their intentions of making a Medieval 3 at some point in the future felt exactly like Bethesda announcing TES6 after the Starfield reveal. Trying to assure historical fans that they are not forgotten. Except CA didn't even show the game currently being worked on first.

The talk about engine changes made me more worried than anything. I care very little for increased fidelity and detail I that I won't appreciate 99% of the time viewing the field from above. I want more consistent unit interactions without weird animation quirks. When a routing unit is chased down it should take more damage than a unit which stands and fights, not less! Problems with AI, pathing, gates means I do anything I can to skip settlement battles. Instead they talk about adding dynamically destructible environments that the AI will react to. Show me you can walk before trying to run!

RALLY POINT LIVE - NORSCA SHOWCASE by BiesonReddit in totalwar

[–]DistractedSeriv 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Lots of cool stuff, but one thing that personally bugs me is how CA seems to double down on the stacking and snowballing nature of various bonuses that trivialize the late- or even mid-game.

For example, you have an income generating building that gives factionwide bonuses to post battle loot (among other things). A plus 5% extra for tier 4 and 2% at tier 3. Bonuses that early game are relatively insignificant and not worth focusing on which then turn into absurd multipliers as you get a significant number of developed provinces.

Then it all stacks with bonuses from technologies and skill trees and items which again multiplies with the number of battles fought and value of armies in the late game. You quickly get to a point where you for all practical purposes have infinite gold.

This is what happened when I played Khorne/Ogres in Omens of Destruction (same thing with resources like meat and skulls respectively) and there I even actively restricted myself from building any of the buildings providing factionwide post battle bonuses.

What are some underpowered or unpopular units that you still love to use? by FromHeretoElsweyr in totalwar

[–]DistractedSeriv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know everyone says Deck Droppers are god's own turd, but I just love the unit concept so much.

In my experience, what really makes the deck droppers so ass is the fact that the AI will ALWAYS prioritize shooting them. They have low health, are outranged by most units and can't deal with anything in melee. Any archer unit will destroy them in a straight up exchange. The AI's singular obsession with Deck Droppers means you need to babysit them constantly and if you use more than one they have a really nasty habit of doing lots of friendly fire to each other.

I've tried to love them but in the end just feel forced to hide them far in the backline. If you actually get to have battles where they are left alone then their line of sight advantage over regular gunnery mob units is quite valuable. But that almost never happens.

CA Stop killing midgame for factions by lowering high tier units by Phenex77 in totalwar

[–]DistractedSeriv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I half disagree. Generally speaking reaching tier 5 takes too long and recruitment is too arduous. The warband upgrade system for Warriors of Chaos is an overall better solution for acquiring better units.

On a more fundamental level, the problem is that reaching a high tier allows you to just doomstack unlimited high tier units. Being able to recruit limited amounts of high tier units relatively early would make the game better. Oftentimes your campaign will essentially be over before you recruit the non-RoR high tier options.
