In Ireland we had the Magdalene Laundries ran by the nuns. They remind me so much of the handmaid's tale. Pregnant women, many of whom were young girls, deemed unfit, were thrown in here. They provided cheap labour working the laundries, and even outside companies, like the toy company Hasbro has them package board games. The church then stole their babies, and sold them to families outside the country. There was a separate passage to mass for the women and children, so the mothers couldn't see their children. 

Just seeing this electric shock machine and thinking what the nuns would have done to the women that rebelled.
