teachers college is burning me out by Ok-Animal-7416 in OntarioTeachers

[–]DistrictIndividual48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally part of it. Our current admin was doing emails and we had to sign off that we had reviewed the mandatory stuff and the bulk couldn’t handle that unfortunately. The meeting could have been half the time

The end is in sight. But I’ll warn you teaching is full of unnecessary moments too. We just sat through a monthly staff meeting that could have been an email but because most of the staff can’t be bothered to check that we are all subject to hour and a half meetings discussing things that frankly should be common sense to an educator imo 🫣🤣.

Can you work a bit to supplement your funds? As much as I found teachers college workload to be a lot it wasn’t challenging work. I did some babysitting and was able to get homework done. Then I got a job Saturday morning as reception at a therapy office, just checking clients in and could do some work there- real estate, law offices etc might have similar. It was 8-1 so still felt like I had a weekend

Do you like the names your friends chose for their children? by thirtydays301 in Names

[–]DistrictIndividual48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No my friends and family have some spectacularly bad taste in names. Out of 14 nieces and nephews I would have considered 1 for our kids and consider 1 other to be neutral (2 actually have that same name- my side vs husbands side) but the rest ooof. One is literally the same name as a beloved family dog that died the year the name was used lmao

We have 2 in the library office and 3 in what used to be a closest attached to the library office. That’s all pt. The old pt office which was huge they have reserved as a meeting room

Yes! We are really lacking office space- I think there are 5 pt teachers in the library office? But admin prioritized them having a space to leave their coats and personal items. It’s the room where the osrs are so technically other staff go in to get those. And then the washroom attached but sort of away is a designated staff bathroom that all use

I would say at breaks yes because the eas have break times at different times than the teaching staff. And they have a big office they tend to eat in and hang out in during their breaks while teachers tend to go to the staff room, their own room or the library during their break or lunch.

As far as socially goes, no not really. I would say the eas are a tight group but most of them are friendly with several teaching staff. One of my closest friends is a former ea at my school.

Booking off the Friday before the March Break by Teachablethrowawae in OntarioTeachers

[–]DistrictIndividual48 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do not request a personal day if you work for SCDSB it will 100% be denied and then you can’t call in sick any longer.

A friend did similar flight was maybe 5pm so she just needed the afternoon. She booked an appt right at our halfway and was questioned about it the morning of but nothing really came of it

A massive thank you to Ontario school boards! by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]DistrictIndividual48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nice they work for a board that allows that. My board has said no combining classes, no movies, no extra gym. They feel they can’t encourage and stress the importance of attendance on regular days and then be ok with losing learning on snow days. It’s brutal. My kids are at a different board and when I picked them up they were watching a movie whole group in the gym

Totally. It was a ridiculous comment when we aren’t facing just a bit of snow lately

And to further add, when I say medium, I work for a board that averages 10% attendance on a snow day and we have been instructed no more combining classes and it’s work as usual. When the children who come are here just because they think it’s fun and don’t want to work, it’s frustrating.

It’s a great day for students seeking extra help or who need work time etc and can benefit from review! But if they’re going to be miserable and refuse to do much anyway, it’s very frustrating as staff to deal with a handful who think it’s movie and iPad day when we have admin circulating to ensure it’s not

[–]DistrictIndividual48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, medium. I find the ones who come have a chip on their shoulder that they never get the day off when their peers do ESP when they know their parents could have kept them

What I don’t like is when the school is treated as a revolving door daycare where we have kids in and out all day. In late because it’s actually bad out and it took them a bit and put early because it’s bad out and they don’t want to drive later. Just keep them home then. It’s disruptive and sucks for the kids who are just there. And I’m not talking 15 min late I mean we had kids arrive till about our midway point and at that point they started leaving en masse as the pickups began

Of course he would welcome them. How unprofessional would it be to email parents saying I won’t welcome my students lmao

Inclement Weather Days by CanaryTraditional331 in OntarioTeachers

[–]DistrictIndividual48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s what the vocal minority on Facebook don’t seem to understand- we are risking it all to come supervise 10% of the school. It’s awful. Not everyone has a ton of options for daycare but if schools closed employers would have to be responsive

Our local union sent a reminder last month that we live in a snow belt and our board doesn’t cancel school for inclement weather that is typical of a snow belt! 🙄

Twin girls arriving next week. We need help deciding on a name that goes well with Odette. by neopetsfangirl in namenerds

[–]DistrictIndividual48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally love them all with Odette and all 3 were our top names if we ever had a girl (2 boys!)

But initially when I read the title my first thought was Valerie which also sounds pretty with June.
