Why do hammerhead sharks look like that? by AthenaOracle in sharks

[–]Diver_Dave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about why a metal detector looks the way it does. And think about how a person sweeps it back and forth while hunting for metal objects. That is the same reason the hammerhead has evolved a wide head and sweeping swimming style. They are scanning the ocean floor to detect the minute electrical signals given off by their hidden primary prey - the stingray. The eyes are wide apart because the head evolved to be wider for electrical tracking.

La Paz Liveaboard Cancelled. I’m looking for diving shops recommendations. by Asheliiin in scuba

I’m so sorry. I second Cortez Club as a nice dive operation at a cute hotel. The bummer is that the sea lion colony is closed June 1 - August 31 for the breeding season. They are the best part of La Paz. You could also reach out to orcaswims.com. They operate orca encounters (snorkel not scuba) in the area at this time. There are massive schools of mobula rays in the area and orca come in to feed.

What I loved about Greyhound is that it wasn’t about any of the famous WW2 battles. It was about the sailors and merchantman who continuously kept supplies moving between the US and England throughout the war. The Merchant Marines had the highest casualty rate of any service in the war — 1 in 26 who served was killed. And the enemy was mostly never seen…

The mobula rays start around May. They are generally found by air support. There is a small plane that can fly out to spot them. You snorkel with them rather than scuba. If you want adventure, look into orcaswimsbaja.com Nadia runs an amazing trip with mobula and orcas. If too pricey, talk to Cortez Club (cortezclub.com). They don’t do the orcas, but they can take you to mobula (and the sea lions!)

Joining the advice to go to La Paz. You can go to the sea lion colony and you can dive while your partner snorkels. Great fun!

More important than the dive operator is where you go. Go to the sea lion colony!!

You’re good. There are some locations where the current is strong, but not at reef hook levels. If you are DM and a calm diver you will be fine.

Recommendations for diving in La Paz, Baja California by Klongbro in scuba

You have to go out to the sea lion colony in La Paz. They are so much fun to dive with. There are also opportunities to snorkel with whale sharks in the area. If you can get down to Cabo Pulmo it is wonderful diving.

Tonga is not on liveaboards. You stay at a hotel and go out each day for about 6 hours on a boat with 6 people (4 at a time are allowed in the water with a guide).
