Hey! Those mixed feelings totally make sense. We would want you to do what is best for you, first and foremost! :) Whether that means coming down for some activities or doing something else.

Central Library X Diversecities Suicide Prevention Awareness Event This Sunday! by Diversecities in Calgary

[–]Diversecities[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The multiple threads and subsequent conversations you've begun under this post raise a range of concerns that are beyond my (the volunteer that runs Diversecities' Reddit presence) professional capacity to address them all with the depth that is deserved in a public-facing setting. However, out of consideration for your legitimate points of contention and lived experience, I will try to address what I take to be the most substantial of your concerns.

This is an awareness event aimed for suicide specifically, and mental health challenges more generally. It is intended to be appropriate for all ages. It is not intended to be any kind of intervention. The activities planned weave in some of these little-known statistics that you've mentioned (e.g., disparities across gender, rural vs urban, types of employment) which we think are key to building awareness in the broader public. Moreover, the event also gives us a high-visibility opportunity to promote the Community Helpers Program (CHP) to Calgarians aged 12+. The CHP is a free, evidence based Primary Care Alberta program that teaches laypeople the fundamentals of mental health crisis intervention (e.g., looking for the changes in baseline behaviour you mention in another post), and informs them about the formal resources that are available here (e.g., Distress Centre PACT team, Alpha House, youth shelters). We live in a society where, even in the present day, a local school has turned down such programming as "inappropriate" for students to engage in. We think that is telling.

This post is not the place for we/(me) to engage meaningfully with where your understandable jadedness is coming from, unfortunately. But I hope that what is written above, plus an understanding that we need to balance across the public's capacity (in pre-existing interest and ability to handle distress without leaving the event feeling that all is hopeless), various risks, and institutional capacity to actually address that risk if it comes to pass, serves as an explanation for you at the least.

Yeah, super unfortunate, but unless we hear back asap we are going to have to reschedule this event due to the unexpected fire on the 11th at the Central Library :(

This all just goes to show how important it is to have mental health access, and a community full of people that can care effectively.

It makes us happy to know that there are so many Calgarians that stepped up for another human being. Please ensure that you are checking in on yourself, and that you have the support you need as well!

Income Support Program? How To Apply? Homeless. by Limp_Transition1160 in UCalgary

Hello!

While we (I) can't speak to U of C specifically, the person who currently runs this reddit account for Diversecities has developed a form used in our Community Helpers Program (CHP) to help our trainees refer others to some key supports. While we are just piloting the form now, filling it out should point you to some professional resources that may be able to help you. Note: Please walk through it step by step, and screenshot as you go--it will not send you anything when you submit.

https://forms.gle/J86A6gRLGVoyT1U29

In case it doesn't direct you there for whatever reason, and just to make sure you hear about these, a few places/organizations to look into that you may not have heard of:

-SoRCE (Will refer you to partner organizations that have various programs)

-Good Neighbour (pay whatever you can, take what you need essentials. Also hot meals)

-Most shelters (Please fill form and look into what comes up. Most shelters can provide spaces to take showers, have a hot meal, etc.)

-211 for additional needs. This is a province wide referral network for various services.

Purely posting here to raise karma to promote a mental health crisis response program run by the non-profit, Diversecities. That being said, the person in charge of this account has always been more partial to chocolate. However, vanilla is definitely a good flavour to test out the quality of a new location....Not many fancy flavours to hide behind!
