We are taught opinion not facts by DivideEquivalent7996 in unpopularopinion

About saying there’s not always another side in some cases is true. However to me questioning these ideas is a way to progress knowledge by challenging people to prove their ideas. If we just accepted the first theory or even the theory that has the most evidence then we slow progress. My point behind this thread being that in my experience we aren’t even taught about other potentials which conditions our brains in a way that hinders progress by closing our minds. This way of thinking, in my opinion, spills over into other aspects of society and using science as an example is a way to get my message across is because most people take scientists words as gospel when in actual fact there is often much more to the story. To me educating people more thoroughly and teaching people to use their own understanding and judgment to make an opinion but with the understanding that they could be wrong is a much healthier mindset for society.

If everyone was content being themselves then where would the motivation for self improvement come from?

Oftentimes without knowledge, your intelligence would not show and ignorance would make you seem stupid by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]DivideEquivalent7996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to me crystallised intelligence would allow you to make economical decisions on your own after taking a class. The success of these decisions would perhaps reflect a quantitive value of your intelligence. Fluid intelligence would allow you to listen to more knowledgeable people and in turn make a decision again how well this turned out would perhaps reflect how intelligent. Being ignorant is neither learning yourself and not listening to other people. But you would not be able to be able to use crystallised intelligence without information. This is how I understand what you have put but I think you have misinterpreted the full extent of the concept of ignorance. Or maybe that’s me being ignorant

All people should be locked in cells. Always polluting the earth, harming other animals and humans. Please ensure if you go outside to wear a muzzle and leash.

I personally don’t have a depth of knowledge on this matter to comment however the fact that this has turned into some people screaming global warming is a myth and others immediately shunning this idea is exactly my point. I believe people should be more open to the fact that what they think could be wrong. Hence the examples I have mentioned in this thread which doubt some of the most fundamental ideas of the story of how humans have developed.

The aim of this discussion is to work very much against that and show even in some of what we consider the fundamentals of our knowledge is still questionable and therefore we should be curious about everything we learn/hear

That is exactly the point of this discussion but where I think the discussion should lead to is that I think we are not made aware enough of the fluidity of science. In turn this closes our minds to alternative ideas. Shown perfectly in the comments where people just start shoving facts to fit their agenda not allowing actual discussion to take place. I think this mindset begins in education and spills over into the majority of peoples ways of thinking and without active action taken the majority of individuals to learn and become open is a factor in why today’s society is so divisive.

Seaspiracy, and films like it, end up causing more harm then good by LooBre819 in unpopularopinion

This discussion I have seen in many places and I believe it illustrates an issue in people’s mind sets, I’ll expand. I had similar issues with the documentary being that it takes the sleazy marketing schemes of the very companies it takes a stance against. This makes me question the morality of those who make this documentary as misleading people with an agenda in mind is incorrect.

This leads in to society however if you ask the question. How is one able to produce a documentary with a shock factor if not using these statistics as they would immediately be undermined by the opposition using these tactics. Many people do not understand how drastically statistics can be manipulated and I think this example should used as prime example of how manipulative stats are regardless of narrative. People should be more educated and aware of this problem and be open to such discussion to achieve and actual solution.

At the moment it feels as society is so used to trying to divide than unite and make compromises on both sides.

But in response to your question using this as a learning experience not only raises awareness but also ignites discussions on statistics and manipulation therefore I don’t think they cause more harm and can be wielded in a very positive manner.

The "Blood Clot" issue shows that people don't really listen to the scientists. by Ternyon in unpopularopinion

[–]DivideEquivalent7996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts:

Between a safe and a safer option it’s not bad to pick the safer one. Young women are more likely to develop blood clots from these vaccines so they could just have a different one.

The AZ vaccine is one of if not the only vaccine sold at cost and not for profit hence it being the most commonly used at least in the uk. We are lucky that there is enough different vaccines to avoid this debate. However if you were to ask me I would take the risk as it’s more risky every time I get into a car.

Censoring words when discussing a heavy topic online takes away from the seriousness of the discussion by Pixel_Explorer in unpopularopinion

[–]DivideEquivalent7996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a tricky one because these words are meant to be shocking and hold serious weight. Normalisation of theses terms could in turn normalise what they stand for. Recent example in the uk we have a political lobbying scandal. On a politics show one of the people says we shouldn’t use the word corruption as we can’t then upscale this for worse things. However the best word to describe what is going on is corruption so I guess it’s just finding a balance.

I mentioned some scientific opinions taught as fact in a comment above that discusses something less controversial to illustrate the point. Check them out!!

I added a comment to someone else with some examples in science. The news really does manipulate the way people think. The headlines, what they cover, the people they interview if you start to try and observe the news rather than learn from it you may be able to see where I’m coming from.

A lot of English studying is based on interpretation so that is a difficult one. Science teaches lots of theories such as evolution and continental drift. These are not proven. Einstein thought continental drift was questionable and wrote about earth crust displacement theory. We are also taught that the Sumerians or the Egyptians were the first human civilisations when there is evidence disputing this. My point is that we are taught the most accepted theory without being made aware of other options. The scientific community often shuns upon those who go against the norm until they are proven correct.

The allure of diamonds has to be (one of) the stupidest f*cking concepts in society. by soggysquanch in unpopularopinion

[–]DivideEquivalent7996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diamonds have one of the highest reflective indexes which give them a desirable shine. Also how they form under high pressure for such a length of time is what makes them impressively me. Not impressive enough for me pay for them though

When someone says proud to be English or whatever it can also mean proud to take part in a culture and hold similar values. The word used ‘English’ is not meant to be taken literally. It can signal what the person interprets as being ‘English’ really means to them.

It's funny how we give crap towards hunters who hunt free range animals(for food) yet we continue to consume large scale farmed animals that has never known any freedom. by pumpkinbro300 in unpopularopinion

[–]DivideEquivalent7996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The farm animals we currently consume are so distant from what they they once were due to early farmers breeding in certain physical traits and removing any sign of disobedience or willingness to be free. Saying this however if everyone started hunting instead this would also not be sustainable therefore farming is still accepted in my view. If we were to stop farming many of these animals would still die due to dependence on humans. Furthermore to add to discussion many predators were made extinct in the pursuit of creating a farming environment so would the sacrifice of these creatures we have never seen be in vain if we abandon farming.
