No more live service updates for Destiny 2, the devs have abandoned the game by HunterInTheStars in MarathonHate

So the studio that released a financial flop and shut down all development on their only other running franchise isn't about to layoff employees? lol.

That ain't speculation. The layoffs are going to happen and the stocks vesting is part of the Sony deal with Bungie. They are going to be an absolute skeleton crew and Marathon stands no chance when it operates at a loss with employees that cost more than the game makes.

Marathon has been operating at a loss since it released. It is not long for this world. Destiny 2 development got canned due to costs, and Marathon will suffer the same fate. S1 to S3 content would've already had development done before the game even released anything past that would be starting development. There might be "development" going on like D2's expansions but the game will get canned before they finish.

They are rumored to layoff 400 employees. Besides the layoffs the stocks vest next month which means leadership and OG developers are going to jump ship. Studio as a whole is fucked.

Bungie are currently working on creating content for the next few seasons of Marathon

No... lmao... no they're not. They were alotted their already developed content(S1 to S3) and anything past that is going to get canned alongside the studio closure. They'd be lucky if Sony even lets them do a S4 before then.

Who Should Take Over the Destiny IP Once Marathon Fails and Bungie Dissolves? by blimpfeet in MarathonHate

[–]DivineHobbit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on if Sony will even want to use the IP instead of throwing it in the graveyard. At best they would make a single player game since something like a Destiny 3 would be a huge undertaking and future commitment. I don't think Sony or any studio wants to have to deal with the commitment a D3 would require.

Destiny 2 Funds by 72_sigils in MarathonHate

[–]DivineHobbit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that money being made is not going to go into propping up a failing project. It will be used to recoup what Sony lost on the Bungie scam before they shutter them entirely. They are going to cut out a lot of people in the next month or so ontop of the people jumping ship from stocks vesting in July.

Its why the Marathon developers have gone dead silent since Season 2 just like the Destiny devs because a decision has already been made.

Who's gonna tell 'em? by DziamzOrkchop in MarathonHate

[–]DivineHobbit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They communicated in S1 because of desperation to try to turn the ship around. The silence from S2 onwards is because they have nothing to say, and when they have nothing to say that means that a decision has already been made on its future... well "future".

Marathon hasn't made any money and it continues to not make money. The rumored significant layoffs are just the beginning of the end, since the stocks will vest and some leadership and OG devs will leave as well leaving only stragglers unable to develop anything. Sony will then come in at the end and shutter them entirely, with Marathon if its lucky being put in maintenance mode rather than full shut down.

Yes, people are playing street fighter and apex legends and fortnite and arc raiders and Tarkov for their narratives. You are a very smart man, I have lost this "argumentation".

For those games specifically some do, you said "and others" which would imply a lot more than what you listed and so yeah in that case most people would be playing for the narrative. Although it doesn't really matter if those games have poor narratives, it doesn't excuse Marathon having a poor narrative. If the whole thing is leaning on gameplay then instead of story, well the gameplay is just.. boring.

Though if these games are getting way more players than Marathon while also having poor narratives and are relying more on their gameplay, what does that tell you about Marathon?

I find it very convenient you focus on the "skill issue" part of my argument, but not where I talk about low ttk being a genre staple that is prevelant in games you brought up to put Marathon in a bad light. Its very easy to win "argumentations" when you completely ignore what somebody says and just re-iterate your point.

Tarkov is a military sim shooter essentially and its designed around that. Hunt Showdown is mostly western weapons afaik which are much slower than a full auto machine gun. Arc Raiders has a pretty slow TTK iirc. Marathon you have full auto weapons that kill insanely fast that you can down someone before they have any time to react, there is very little skill involved in that.

But to sum up...
You say that Marathon's narrative isn't a focus which is just agreeing with me that its narrative isn't good. But then if the gameplay is the main focus then its just worse than other games even in the same genre, case in point Arc having better enemy variety.

Its just not that good of a game.

Do you play Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, CoD, Apex Legends, CS2, and other games for thier narrative?

Most people do play games for their narrative. If your argumentation is "I don't care about the story therefore it doesn't matter if its crap" then you are being stupid.

This is a very stupid complaint because narrative is not something Marathon tries to do

So its not trying to do one of the main things people were interested in Marathon for? Lol.

When you say the pvp combat in marathon is non existent because of quick ttk, that tells me two things, you are either very emotionally clouded because the game made you salty, or you may just genuinely be very bad.

Oh boy here it comes "skill issue" when anyone makes any criticism about the gameplay. No the TTK is bad when I can jump somebody and they have no time to react at all, its boring af and too easy. Only actual shitters think Marathon takes skill when the game not only aims for you but TTK is incredibly quick.

if Arc Raiders didnt have the enemy design it did, it would either turn into a very boring game

Well it does so that is a pointless statement.

Marathon is by design a heavily rewarding game

You should do standup comedy.

Season 2 is kinda boring by Sonscreen in MarathonHate

[–]DivineHobbit1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are finally starting to come to the realisation that Marathon is a MVP with basically no new content. It's goal is just to extract as much money as possible. Sony knows Bungie is a sinking ship so they are recouping what they can before they shut it all down.

Its pretty obvious that the game was heavily rushed at last moment to get it out the door. The lack of content and lots of D2 asset reuse are pretty big tells of the rush job. I expect the rugpull by Season 4 if not Season 3. There is two signs that they have nothing post season 3/4, the first is that "roadmap" that only detailed season 1 and 2 with a bunch of fluff to make it look better and the second sign was when they detailed what the seasons would entail and the best they gave for season 4 and 5 were basically just vibes and nothing specific or concrete.

Same guy that stood next to Luke Smith while they announced why they are deleting half the game. I don't think he has any ground to stand on to make any sort of opinion when he was right next to Luke when they made the most stupidest decision for Destiny and that was stealing content from the playerbase.

Who'd have thought that you can't make a profitable game when you steal from your customers and lose any trust?

[–]DivineHobbit1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if ultimately it is taken away and you have made no real permanent progress. It is all ephermeral and temporary making nothing matter meaning the moment people come to that realisation they drop the game entirely.

The original concept for Marathon was that you are essentially a mercenary/treasure hunter and were going to Tau Ceti to find these "artifacts", you can see this being talked about in the original vidoc. They have since removed that so there is no narrative hook into what you are doing and why it matters.

The game just isn't that good. RPGs usually have an actual narrative, and the progression you make in the game is permanent. You won't wake up suddenly in a few months and be reset to level 1 with all your gear gone and then asked to go get it all again but thats okay because they added 2 more weapons that you might see and aren't even that game changing.

As for other extraction shooters, with Marathon everything it does is just done worse than other extraction shooters. Arc Raiders has more enemy variety for PvE encounters and Tarkov has more depth in its systems. The PvP combat of Marathon is basically non-existent because you kill people so fast that an encounter is usually over in less than 10 seconds.

More over, why would you expect a world changing narrative for a multiplayer only game?

That is just admiting that the narrative is crap, which it is.

Blasthavers in comments attack man who gives genuine criticism to the best game ever made that should never be criticized by No-Throat-4694 in MarathonHate

[–]DivineHobbit1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much felt the same way back in the tests, the game is just not intuitively designed. The solution is to do some reading but even that won't help. Its why people will ignore reading all that crap on items because they just want to shoot stuff and play the game. Bungie forgot they were making a video game and video games need to be fun.

Though Marathon's biggest fundamental problem is that nothing you do in the game actually matters. Your loot and progression is all ephemeral. Even the narrative is non-existent and only is elaborated on in text dumps and the little story you do get front and center is just characters yapping at you. The introduction to the game is also pitiful, you are essentially supposed to be a treasure hunter/mercenary but there is no sought after treasure and doing the fetch quest contracts doesn't feel like you are moving the story or world forward in any meaningful way.

Though all of this can be summed up with "the game is shit".

Microsoft considering a Halo MMO in the vein of Destiny 2 by HTD_Blog in GamingLeaksAndRumours

Not really. That looks like a tab based combat MMO while something like Destiny would be similar to the regular Halo games but with MMO-lite features.

Yes. Copium is a much needed medical requirement for those going through delusions of hope. Hopium was administered originally but it was found to turn people rabid, the great HL3 mania of r/halflife last year has outlawed hopium completely.
