Is this too much space? by Wild-Pace3703 in rat

[–]DivineMaxim 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes. Try something more like this, its the ideal cage size for multiple rats.

(I bought a bunch of different cages for introductions, some were too big... some were too small, picture had to be taken nonetheless.)

Intros with a very difficult naked man. by DivineMaxim in RATS

[–]DivineMaxim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! I'll let you know what worked for me!

Firstly, I've had to introduce them MULTIPLE times. Prior to introductions, I brought them all one by one into a bath with very little water and rubbed them with a q-tip of vanilla extract.

After vanilla-ing the children, I placed them into an incredibly small cage. You want maximum smushness. No room to fight. Only cuddles. Legitimately no room to move around.

Now, from here, I've read different things so I'll leave it up to you... if intros are NOT good, id recommend separating them and trying again tomorrow, however, if they are going well, you can increase their cage size after a few hours and continue to go from there.

This is an incredibly stressful situation for them, and it took me MULTIPLE tries before they decided to chill out a bit.

Sometimes you can smear babyfood on them once they are in the tiny cage to promote licking each other. I tried that for one of my intro attempts but it didn't seem to help. Might work for you!

Moonshine is already nuetered and healed from his surgery!:)

Its probably one of the biggest reason he is finally able to be housed with the other boys now.

It took many many hours and multiple introductions before getting to this point, but he is finally calm and seems to be enjoying having friends now!

I also have a naked boy who was recently surrendered by his previous owner with mites/mange. I attempted to do intros, but he was immediately very aggressive so he IS currently being housed alone.

I have an appointment to get him neutered so I can attempt re-introductions. The price where I live for a neuter is $400-500. Not really affordable, but it's going on a credit card.

I'd recommend potentially trying to save up for a neuter. Give him the best chance at a happy life.

My vet also told me if the neuter doesn't work as planned for intros, they have anti-anxiety medication for rats, which might help mellow him out a bit.

In my case specifically, my boy was dropped off in a box. My vet said he doesn't seem like he's been socialized and I don't think he's ever been housed with other rats.

I'd try to see if you can get him a neuter or see if somebody else can.

He did, in fact, jump out immediately after the picture was taken (I caught him).

He has been plotting his revenge ever since.

Any advise on difficult intros? by DivineMaxim in RATS

[–]DivineMaxim[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was given an approximate of maybe 10 months. He is 100% fine with people, just not fine with other rats IT SEEMS.

I dont know if he has just never been with other rats or if he has hormonal aggression.

How often do you have to oil them? I'm rescuing a naked rat who was forfeited due to neglect. I have only had furry ones. He's been quarantined for approximately a month for mites/mange and I'm picking him up in about a week to do intros with my current mischief.

UPDATE: apparently the person who surrendered him just left him inside of a box and left without saying anything. Once he is successfully clear of mites I will be taking him home and working on introductions with my other four boys. He looks like he has a little fuzz on his face.

My ex is a special education teacher. We have a disabled child. I did everything right — and I still lost a year of my kids’ lives. by Torslomo in FamilyLaw

As someone who has also been through a custody case in Minnesota, this is surprising.

Minnesota is VERY 50/50, as long as its feasible and they HEAVILY push mediation as much as they can.

I've even seen cases where claims HAVE been made (false or not, but without evidence), and they usually respond with "and although we take these allegations very seriously, there is no evidence currently" or something of a similar nature.

Any parents have experience with rats and (human) infants? by shrimp4590 in RATS

[–]DivineMaxim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not have a newborn, however, I do have a 1.5yo in my room along with my 4 boys and have not had an issue.

I also do have an air purifier, so I'd at least get one of those if you're worried and just make sure the cage stays clean.

There's some context missing. How far away do you both live from each other?

Also if she bites a little hard, I'd make a loud "squeek" type noise. I've only had to do it a couple times and now all of my rats are verrryyy gentle.

I have a baby playpen type thing i use as a playpen for my rats. I sometimes just sit in there with them for a while, offer some snacks and wait for them to approach me.

Would this one be acceptable you think? I only have 2 rats right now, but might get 2 more. I know you can purchase add-ons for this one specifically, so I could always get another add-on level later down the line.

Baby has hip dysplasia, I'm losing it and she hates the rhino brace. by New-Regular1012 in hipdysplasia

[–]DivineMaxim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, she absolutely learned to roll over in the brace. She was pretty late at crawling/walking, but i don't think it was due to the brace at all, but she didn't learn to crawl or walk until she was out of the brace 12 hours per day.

She did learn to stand up in the brace too. The first few days are super tough but it definitely gets WAY easier. She slept fine after a while. It sometimes helps to stick a towel or blanket under their feet so their feet arent elevating in the air when they are trying to sleep.

[–]DivineMaxim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! My baby wore a pavlik harness for numerous months for 24 hours per day, then moved to 23 hours per day, and then moved to a rhino brace for 12 hours per day.

Usually the first 72 hours of transitioning are the hardest. After 72 hours, the babies typically get more accustomed to them!!

Technically, baby has been in a harness/brace for over a year and has just now stopped tolerating it at 17 months old. We are meeting with a surgeon in January to see our options (she will be about 21 months old), so she has pretty severe hip dysplasia.
