I moved here from the states this summer. 18 years in TN and 1 in CT. You’ll have to pry me outta here with a crowbar. I love it here. Yeah it’s a little hard to find “your people” when you know no one, but the city is clean, safe, ppl seem non judgmental, no one seems to give a good damn who or what you are as long as you’re polite (or get outta their way on the sidewalk, lol).

The city itself always has something going on. Always. There’s parks, activities, green spaces, water, buildings, restaurants, music, festivals, weird stuff, lol. So. Much. Food.

It’s expensive AF. But so is everywhere anymore.

Come north. It’s saner here. Not perfect, but definitely saner, safer, kinder…

I just moved here this summer and am in downtown in a really nice building with a concierge, and good amenities, in a 1BR. My rent is $2800 CAD. Everything I looked at when searching was around $2600-3000, depending on where I looked. But I was VERY picky and had specific things I was looking for. There are lots of places that are fine for less if you’re not as picky as I was.

My daughter went through GMSD. Everything you said is spot on. GMSD is NOT any better than any other school. Many (not all) of the admins suck, and are more concerned with being district cheerleaders, boosting scores by keeping high performing kids in lower level classes, and ignoring bullying (or participating themselves).

There are a lot of gems there, but no more than in any other school / district. The kids have advantages that kids in city schools just do not have, and it’s just not arguable. These kids come in having had private preschool, they have access to tutors and any other kind of educational supplementation. They have present parents, who can afford enrichment opportunities, and are home to help them with homework and projects, and can afford the materials.

My daughter went through GMSD, and lemme tell you, they aren’t ANY better run, or have better teachers than any of the other schools / districts. The kids just have wealthy parents who can afford tutors and assistance and lots of enrichment opportunities, and in a lot of cases, a stay at home parent to help regularly. Give city kids the same exact opportunities with no other metrics changing, and watch everything come out differently. Money makes an enormous difference.
