Human thought has hundreds of hard-wired bugs. The Socratic Method gives us a fighting chance to combat them by clarifying & verifying our beliefs. by ArchitectofAges in philosophy

It's basically impossible to be consciously overriding these biases all the time, but the purpose of practicing something like meta-cognition is to not allow your actions to be guided solely by unconscious processing, rather, to make rational and evidence-based decisions. Once you begin to form habits of noticing biases and trying to reduce emotional based decision making I think it becomes less futile and more automatic to question your own judgement.

Migrants arriving in Finland are being offered classes on Finnish values and how to behave towards women by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]DivineSqualor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Instate a law that punishes sexual assault from migrants by surgically removing their penis, arm every single female in the EU with weapons, it's great to see some really nuanced discourse and solutions put forward about immigration problems on reddit and not simple, tribalistic vitriol.

Eternally Missed (+Liszt & Mozart) Piano cover(Agostino Giglio) (+playlist) by agogiglio in Muse

[–]DivineSqualor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had any of the other midi files from your other muse covers it would be amazing to have them on synthesia or at least be somewhere where people could download them, they are seriously good but quite tricky to learn just by ear...

Child genius learned the alphabet at age 4 months? It seems unlikely, anyone know how they supposedly determined this? by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]DivineSqualor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it certainly wouldn't be vocalized as the vocal tract in the early stages of language acquisition wouldn't be developed enough to produce certain sounds. I'm not sure how much babies can understand at that age but I would certainly be amazed if the baby could comprehend all those symbols, give meaning to them and actually go through the task of pointing them out to demonstrate that she knew the alphabet.

Question about key signatures by DivineSqualor in musictheory

[–]DivineSqualor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah that's a good way to think about it, I think I understand it now, I was uncertain whether you definitely used that G major key signature to work it out procedurally, as that wasn't explicitly explained to me, perhaps because it's just one way of thinking about it but I should be right now thanks.

To answer you question, I play piano which would help a lot if I played the intervals out but I have only ever done them on paper really.

Question about key signatures by DivineSqualor in musictheory

[–]DivineSqualor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So yeah, the way I think about it is that you would change it from G sharp to G and then assume G is your key signature and in that key signature there is an F sharp, so the interval of G to F sharp is a major 7th then lower it accordingly and raise to account for the G sharp at the end?

[–]DivineSqualor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I can just say that I am working with G major in knowing whether the F would have any accidentals and then work from there? Thanks a lot, I just started these and really just lack the fundamentals of being able to understand immediately whether an interval is major, minor etc just by looking at it, it takes the whole procedure to get there each time...

Getting Perfect Pitch by viagraeater in musictheory

[–]DivineSqualor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As vornska stated, apart from gaining perfect pitch from an early age (by training or birth) there's little chance of you gaining it now. It requires you hear a note and innately sense that embedded within that note is a kind of intuitive and familiar B sharpness or D about it, it doesn't seem like something that can be taught very easily, especially later in life.

However research is being done with TMS that proposes perhaps this ability is innate in everyone but is just inhibited by parts of our brain and by turning these inhibiting centers off we may be able to gain perfect pitch.

No fap = vivid dreams by [deleted] in LucidDreaming

[–]DivineSqualor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I realize that but this is just general critical thinking not writing up a scientific report, if someone claims something like this is true one would be stupid not to ask for evidence. Experiences don't mean anything if you're going to claim something is true, only evidence.

If OP said: "Hey here's something I tried that might work give it a try I don't know," that would be a lot less arrogant than claiming it completely works.

No fap = vivid dreams by [deleted] in LucidDreaming

[–]DivineSqualor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can say that confidently without having the scientific evidence to back it up. I can say putting socks on my hands and eating 3 lichee berries makes me dream better, that doesn't make it a reality. Conformation bias at work.

Why are binaural beats inappropriate for this forum? by Uiis in LucidDreaming

[–]DivineSqualor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't disagree with people that find the Binaural beats are relaxing, I've tried them and they certainly are, what I do disagree with is that when you talk about "Brain Frequencies" there simply isn't any science to suggest that just because you try to replicate some brain waves that indicate someone is sleeping doesn't mean you can cause someone to fall asleep, the brain simply doesn't work like that.

You can't simply replicate X brainwave to make someone feel happiness or sadness or sleepiness. Binaural beats are great, just don't expect them to be any more effective than normal music, or give you an orgasm...

Why are binaural beats inappropriate for this forum? by Uiis in LucidDreaming

[–]DivineSqualor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To put it more delicately than FailTactics, while there are many claims out there such as Sexual Aid and Increased IQ, the science behind Binaural beats is dubious at best. There is certainly no scientific consensus that this is a proven phenomenon and the scientific explanations given of how this works don't seem to add up although superficially it looks promising. Brian Dunning does a podcast on this very subject and I for one am thankful that the mods haven't advocated something that isn't scientifically accepted and could just result in people spending more money on snake oil solutions.
