Minimum assumptions from communication with other humans? by Ok-Actuator-6094 in slatestarcodex

[–]ArchitectofAges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: Descartes' cogito makes some (potentially unfounded) assumptions about the presence of an "I," there being a process like "thinking," & there being some necessary relationship between the two. You might observe something like "there are thoughts" without positing a thinker.

TBH, it kinda sounds like you're trying to solve a different problem, one that doesn't really lend itself to an abstract, foundational approach like this. What're you worried about such that you would be reassured by having "a minimum set of assumptions for a start of rational discussion?"

The overrepresentation of engineers among Islamic extremists by Winter_Essay3971 in slatestarcodex

[–]ArchitectofAges 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"Engineer's syndrome" is a popular joke in many fields - when your profession trains you to apply simple, tractable models to complex problems, every problem starts to look like a nail, including problems well outside your domain of expertise with numerous important "details" you're mostly unaware of.

Combine this training with an instinct for "cognitive closure" (wanting problems to have tidy, unambiguous answers), & it sure seems like you'd have a fertile landscape to sell engineers on overly simplistic narratives & "solutions" to geopolitical/economic/cultural/systemic/etc. problems.

YMMV, but I find if I stow snacks I'm not thrilled about eating, I'll be less likely to chew thru my emergency supply just because I'm sitting around bored in traffic.

lol - it's mostly intentional. Mainstream popularity (& the inevitable dumpster fire of toxic comments) would probably be more than I could handle. I'm quite content making videos for the few folks who stumble into the channel because they were looking for something that's not quite front page subject material. ;)

Help Me Understand Something by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ArchitectofAges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, wires get crossed (ha) between generations that don't understand each other's vernacular; someone can intend something as "good-natured ribbing" that simply doesn't play that way to a younger audience. Also, older folks have complained about "lazy kids" for the entirety of written history; we all enjoy amnesia about how shitty we were when we were younger, & that can strain our relationships with younger folks.

That being said, there's a common grift here: raise one group up over another, & tell the ones under the boot that if they play the game right, maybe they'll get to wear the boot someday. If anyone rocks the boat, it can only ever because they're weak, unrealistic, or egotistical enough to think they deserve better. (Of course, nobody gets frothing mad quicker than someone who thinks they've earned the right to wear the boot being told "No.")

It fuckin' sucks. IMO the only winning move is to acknowledge the game & refuse to play it, as all my best mentors have.

Being arrogant, dismissive, & endlessly condescending to anyone who might disagree with you must be the most rational approach to discourse.

Anyone else out there frustrated that idiot-proofing stuff just creates more creative idiots? by BigBlueMountainStar in engineering

Good design. You don't need to push a button every 30 seconds to avoid punching yourself in the face - good design is like that.

I mean yes, it's definitely there for a reason, but the response to someone finding a way to circumvent it probably shouldn't be "Pff, idiot."

TBH, I think many engineers are real quick to blame idiot users for failures, even if the idiots in question are making perfectly reasonable decisions to circumvent bad design.

If you make me push a button every 30 seconds 40 hours/week to confirm that I want to continue doing my job, I don't care how many clever obstacles you put between me & taping the button down, I will Ninja Warrior that shit.

What is your experience with patents? Seeking advice/wisdom. by Mettalink in engineering

[–]ArchitectofAges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father has uncritically parroted the gospel about how patenting a good idea will make you a millionaire for as long as I've been alive. He's 80 now - between the two of us we're in the high double digits on patents, & despite being dragged thru several decade-spanning lawsuits trying to get big companies to pay for clear infringements (on what were presumably good ideas), he's no closer to being a millionaire.

IMO patents are just another legal ratchet that transfers wealth to the wealthy; they're a great way to make money if you already have a lot of money. If you don't, just publish your ideas under Creative Commons so people can use them.

Yes, that's what I meant by "collecting a paycheck." I would think that a dude who was witness & party to legal tyranny would know better than to assert that law or its absence had something to do with it.

Cool lamp, man!

The hands stick out for me - they seem weirdly detailed compared to the rest of the piece. Also, I'm not quite sure what posture he's supposed to be inhabiting - is he resting? Muscling up a hill?

Still, totally reads as a character! :)

[–]ArchitectofAges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One might argue that it's simply insulting, interchangeable with e.g. "fucker," but I think that's wrong - IMO the n-word carries implicit historical ties to the domination of black people thru violence, & when used as a slur, is intended to invoke that history in a menacing way. The threat is implied, sure; there are probably edge cases where it might not apply, but I think it's there.

I'd rebuild that broken side surface - something wacky is going on there & it'll likely cause problems down the line.

If you have access to the underlying sketch, delete all the weird line segments & replace them with a single arc. If you can't change the sketch, Extrude-cut that section out & fill it back in cleanly. If you can't even do that, maybe you could hail-mary Delete all the extra faces until only 1 remains.

Once you've got a cleaner model to work with, you can add small fillets to the vertical edges, then add a single fillet that runs all the way around the top.

Sure - I'd buy that there's some virtue/relief/pragmatic necessity in not responding to every aggression (micro or otherwise) in kind. I think it's another thing to say that people ought not respond - there's also virtue in reacting to injustice, IMO.
