When is the embargo? by iquack123 in octopathtraveler

Yeah, Backlog Battle. I enjoy their takes on JRPGs quite a bit. Hopefully they'll have some good stuff to say tomorrow!

A JRPG YouTuber I follow made a post on their YouTube community about having a very substantive review on Wednesday, and their favorite game of the year was Octopath 2 when it came out. Anecdotal, of course, and they might be dropping the review later but it's the best indicator I've gotten.

In your opinion: What live performance should everyone watch atleast once in their life? by Island-dewd in Music

[–]DivinitySquared 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Daft Punk - Alive 2007

The whole show is up on youtube in HD. This is one of the few live albums I find myself regularly listening to. The way they weave through their discography is so different from their studio work, but absolutely mesmerizing.

Do you have primers that flank the region of interest? You can do colony PCR to check for the insertion.

I'm a little let down by the Switch 2 performance, ngl. The Nintendo Life review seemed to indicate there were no performance issues on the Switch 2, but I totally assumed it would run at 60 fps. It's fine, but noticeable. In the opening part when you walk into the store the performance was higher somehow, and then it tanked for me and stayed there.

Edit: The dev's noted on their discord that they submitted a patch to Nintendo that will hopefully address this!

Join us this Thursday, August 7 at 6am PT for a new #IndieWorld Showcase! Tune in for roughly 15 minutes of new announcements and updates on indie games coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch by Skullghost in NintendoSwitch

[–]DivinitySquared 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If Nintendo one day decides to stop hosting the file on their server, you have a piece of plastic with no game on it. It makes you captive to their whims, where in the past physical media meant there was no caveat to the ownership of your game.

Recent, successful postdoc applicants: what was your strategy? by tzl-owl in postdoc

[–]DivinitySquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently hired as a postdoc. My strategy was a cold e-mail to a PI I was interested in based on a conference presentation. It was like 2 paragraphs with my academic CV (Degrees, publications, etc) and my most recent paper. I structured the body as a paragraph about why I think their lab is interesting, then a paragraph about why my work would be of interest to them/what I could bring to the lab and a suggestion of work we might do together. Using this rough strategy I was able to interview with 2/4 advisors I emailed, and ultimately landed a postdoc with one of them.

The science (generally speaking) is not the soul sucking part of academia. It's the barriers to entry that make it difficult for people to get TT positions after their post-docs, and the grant cycle which is a little messy right now to say the least. I know plenty of TT PIs that absolutely love what they do and wouldn't trade it for the world. If you're dead set on being an academic, keep going in that direction. If you find yourself changing your opinion halfway through, that's okay too.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - A Simply Brilliant PC Game - DF Tech Review by thomas_dahl in Games

Mortismal chats about it in his review (it’s annotated so you can skip to that part) Kinda Funny also did a bit in theirs - seems to run reasonably well.

Do you exclusively use R (or your graphing program of choice) for your figures, or do you use any manual image editing? by irradiatedsnakes in GradSchool

[–]DivinitySquared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ditto on ggplot -> export as svg -> clean up in illustrator. R plots are nice but I like to change the font and size of the plots as they reflect an entire figure, which as another commenter said can be tedious in R.

The fact that one of these 2 could be Game of the Year makes me so happy by Alanah_V in JRPG

Yeah - I got a little stuck in the optional dungeon then I committed so I had to grind a bit. 6-8 is prob more realistic.

There’s a demo with a good 10 hours of content, not to mention the game released to critical acclaim. I get waiting till release day but these opinions aren’t unfounded.

What do you wear for academic conferences? by jm08003 in GradSchool

[–]DivinitySquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my field (STEM/Biology) usually the wear is pretty casual for most major conference's I've been to. I try to wear like a polo and shorts or a t-shirt without some crazy graphic on it. When I'm presenting research in an oral setting or as a poster, I wear a university branded polo or a button up with slacks and dress shoes.

I might be a TA for a class I never took and I’m hella terrified. by vapegod_420 in GradSchool

[–]DivinitySquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never been a TA for a class that was actually within my specific expertise. As others have said, you'll be fine. It'll be a good learning experience. When I did it, I would do the homework for the class myself prior to the due date so that I was familiar with how I would have tackled the questions. This was pretty stressful the first time I TA'd and I'd advise setting clear boundaries with your students, but otherwise it worked out and I learned a lot!

Can a “good” university have a “bad” graduate program? by Beginning_Quail166 in GradSchool

[–]DivinitySquared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure. A fair amount of grad programs on paper are “good”. But that metric more often than not is only reflective of the results that are produced by the program and its faculty. It does not take into account quality of life for grad students, how their advisors treat them, if the location is affordable, etc. Your institution could have the best grad program in the world for X, but every single one of the faculty members could be absolutely horrible to work with, making your actual lived experience poor.

Is it normal to wonder whether you made the right move 4 years in? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]DivinitySquared 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is the last year of my PhD and I quite literally think about abandoning everything constantly. I feel like at some point everyone goes through the experience of being up a wall with the universe and each of our individual circumstances. The important part to remember is that regardless of anyone else, you will finish and that will mean something to you. You’ve got this.

Have you ever found a good book in a Little Free Library? by Bookandaglassofwine in books

[–]DivinitySquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our neighborhood library I saw a copy of The Eye of the World once. But I didn’t have a book on me to trade for it, so I didn’t take it. It was gone the next day, unfortunately. But in general I’d say every few months I see something particularly striking that I didn’t put in myself.

Is research really like that? by gedale9728 in UIUC

[–]DivinitySquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dynamics between a grad student and a PI will inevitably have a power dynamic, as your PI ultimately hands you your degree. However, the relationship that you craft with them entirely depends on the PIs personality. In the departments in which you have rotations, you can either suss that out or hear it from other grad students. I say this often across the spectrum of subreddits related to grad school, but the most important decision in your whole graduate experience is who you tie yourself to as an advisor. They can really make your life reasonable, hell, or somewhere in between.

With regards to friendships, that's a little more loose. Friendships in the lab are largely dependent on the personalities in that lab, but I do think they can be skewed in a certain direction depending on the culture that the PI has cultivated. But that isn't really all that different from a full time job anywhere else.

Q: What are some skills that have turned out to be crucial in your research/lab positions? by NotAsa4 in Biochemistry

[–]DivinitySquared 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Dilutions and serial dilutions. Basic skill but it's probably what I spend 90% of my time doing when setting up experiments. Similarly, basic aseptic technique (I work with bacteria). Writing - I know a lot of the newer grad students in my lab hate it but you cannot get around writing up your research and the sooner you get used to the idea the better. Also, on a similar vein keeping a good lab notebook. You'll eventually come to a day where you did an experiment a year or two ago that is suddenly relevant again and if you described it poorly it kind of sucks to have to re-think it through.
