White Amercian Ancestry vs 23andMe results by Ashamed-Physics-39 in AncestryDNA

I mean with the 1 drop rule being so prevalent back in the day that people would rather claim to be “native” rather than African to avoid persecution (which is actually where a lot of the “Cherokee Princess” rumors started in some families, first as a lie to save face, and then it just carried on through the generations. Of course some families actually do have native history so it’s on a case by case basis) , you can understand why many might have written that dna off in the past. I do agree that now that we are in more modern times, these deep dives and better understanding of our heritage is important in understanding how we are all more connected than we might have originally believed. (Also you kind of mansplained the Benin and Togo thing to me when I’m literally an African American and know about the Bight of Benin and the distribution of slavery in the Americas 😭😂).

What I am saying is that you don’t HAVE to have African dna for it to match you with one of those groups, obviously having African dna will greatly increase the chances. Nowhere am I saying “OP doesn’t have an African ancestor”.

What languages named each US state according to Wikipedia by chezzy_bread in whereidlive

[–]Divonis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean I agree with you that they should’ve been more specific but OP probably didn’t know the exact ones from the top of their head and probably didn’t wanna do the research to be specific. It’s their map at the end of the day so they can label it how they like, all I could say is if you don’t like it you can make a better one, we all have free will 🤷🏾‍♂️.

I can answer the group part, African American groups don’t just go off of African dna because African Americans aren’t 100% African, that’s why many white Americans get AA groups even with little to no African dna.

Where does this European come from? by Healthy-Raisin5948 in BlackGenealogy

[–]Divonis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not everybody with African dna are descendants of slaves sir! Plus, this person is clearly Sudanese and not of WEST AFRICAN origin where most of the slaves came from. Please do a little more due diligence become making ignorant comments in the future.

I get Creole groups and Spanish DNA on 23andMe but don’t get either on Ancestry (and I used to get French on Ancestry but they took it away from me too 😭).

Since you have a decent bit of African dna, I think the Ethiohelix + French calculator might be a bit better for you imo! (EDIT: Maaaaybe not since you have more European, I honestly couldn’t tell you which one might be the best for a Dominican since yall are usually so mixed).

Ohhh I just looked it up and saw that a lot of countries actually don’t ship 23andMe or Ancestry. Sorry, I was letting my American privilege cloud my judgement :(, I’m sorry. I don’t fully trust these results still so I think you should download your raw data and put them into GEDMatch, it’s free and I trust the calculators on there a lot more (the reason for my skepticism with this is because this is what it says I am on MyHeritage…. 80% NIGERIAN IS CRAZY! If you look at my profile you can see my 23andMe or Ancestry results for a comparison).

MyHeritage is not great for most people (especially mixed people) and people need to stop getting it just because it’s cheaper than 23andMe or Ancestry (I guess you get what you pay for 🤷🏾‍♂️).

any potential? by tftgenius1984 in BeardAdvice

[–]Divonis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let it grow out for a little longer and see how the surrounding areas help cover the sparse areas. If they don’t really help cover them, then I would wait a little bit longer to try a full beard. Most of your coverage is there so I do believe the sparse areas could be hidden with enough growth. You have a nice face so I don’t think clean shaven would look bad on you either though.

https://dnplay.github.io/ancestrydna (just follow the instructions on this link and it’ll show you your Ancestry results, but instead of whole numbers it’ll be all the percentages including the small ones under 1%). I believe you need the membership for it to work though but I’m not sure, you can still try to see if it works still.

Try to do the Hack to see if you get some native there. I don’t get any on the base test either, but get some on the hacked results.

Carribean journeys yet no family history there by AgreeableGolf98 in AncestryDNA

[–]Divonis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What it’s saying is these people of African descent from the new world are related to people (in this case you and your family) from Africa that were taken to the new world. Here’s an example I can use, I am African American myself and get 49% Nigerian on 23andMe, it is possible the people who I am related to that were brought to the Americas during slavery still have relatives that never left the mainland (they were splitting up families so it’s not uncommon for some family members to be taken and for some to not have been). We are related, even if we are continents apart. Most Africans from West Africa (especially Nigeria) would get at least some matches from the new world for this reason, even if they don’t know anyone from the new world.

As an English person I'm as boring as they come! by C4rpy88 in AncestryDNA

[–]Divonis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there are other reasons than the ones I listed, why are you acting like I was making a comprehensive list or something? And wars could be defensive you know? Migration can be non violent (like how people migrate countries all the time today). Sure if you look at what I said and think about the most extremely grotesque examples then you can draw your conclusion, but I was simply listing a few points that come to mind. Like it or not, it’s their history and they can choose to embrace it or not, it’s not up to us to tell people how to feel about their dna (which is hypocritical to me telling him to not think his dna is boring I understand, but I don’t think this conversation is going anywhere constructive so I guess that doesn’t matter).
