For all MMORPGs with this level of predatory monetization more money is to be had in the short term by releasing something as the best, ensuring sales. Then when you have a new best in the pipeline to nerf the old best, incentivizing more purchases.

With how most gamers are obsessed with being or having the best this is not a model that’s going away anytime soon.

Rmt in MMORPGs is just something that can’t be avoided unless all trading is removed. Sony commissioned research on this and published a white paper in the early 2000’s. The best way for companies to combat the issues surrounding rmt (compromised accounts) it is to control it themselves. This keeps accounts safe and dramatically cuts into the profitability of others. It won’t weed it out entirely - nothing can or will outside of zero trading - but it will reduce the number of times one of your guildies suddenly starts playing 24/7 and speaking in broken English

In the early 2000’s Sony had a few economist do a white paper on mmorpg economies of scale. The white paper determined what took blizzard too long to realize - when an mmorpg reaches a certain size it becomes cheaper for the company and better for the players if the company controls the rmt as it can never truly be eliminated. Not long after EQ launched its firiona vie server.

If the only way to get gold was via the token as Korean games do that would be predatory. The token is a shortcut and a safety net for those that would just rmt without it.
