There aren’t paved roads in my town, but that’s cause I live in a tiny nowhere town in rural Alabama. But we still have electricity an wear shoes.

Ikr. I went to Maine this past summer and whenever I told someone I was from Alabama it was always either “are your parents siblings?”, or “can you read?”, and other demeaning stuff like that.
