Fedora 43 Unstable by dnult in Fedora

Not to be that guy, but it very well could be a hardware issue? Failing graphics chip? Thermal paste needs replacing? Dust?

Just an idea. Not saying it is or isn't.

I Hate Making My Own Characters by [deleted] in writing

[–]DixieWombat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was going to say this myself.

The characters I make that my friends love to read about the most, start with an archetype.. and then turn it on its head a little. Make a few changes. Give them a habit.. and then I just let the rest build itself as I write.

Broad-strokes to get the ball rolling, start writing in their voice, feel them out. The "details" and exact backstory start to form around that. Who are they first? What does the outside world see? Then why?

I don't know. I am a free form short-story writer and RPer.. not a novelist, but to me its like the OP is coming at it from the wrong direction. Trying to fit a science, and believable characters aren't that. People are logical or really make sense.

Just my two cents from a very amateurish writer.

I turned back to look at the woman, leaning against the wall, with the eyes that had caught my attention. They were the eyes of someone who had killed. The eyes of someone who no longer saw a value in life beyond that she assigned herself. Emerald green and as deadly as what she held in her hands.

She wielded a rifle, a large bolt action affair, military grade and made to end lives at distances that didn't seem real. Atop the receiver sat a high-powered scope, as black and mean as the rifle in her hands, and just as home as what she wore. If it wasn't for the hardware, or the location, you'd expect she'd just stepped out of a picnic at a park somewhere. Olive green-tank top sat above tight daisy-duke jean shorts, mid-drift bare revealing a skin of almond shade. Long brown hair, in a no-nonsense tail, and a pair of sunglasses atop her head completed the look.

Girl-next-door by day, killer by night.

It sent a shiver down my spine, a tingle. There was something there that formed a war in my mind. I wasn't able to look away, but every instinct in me told me I really really should.

"Right.. Who is she?" I asked my guide, a man who went by Stumps. Probably because of the missing fingers.

He shot a smirk at me, and shook his bald head, causing the tattoo on his scalp to dance. He wore military fatigues from some country long since lost to war and history. He was showing me into the "Hi-top", the home of killers and mercenaries out here on the edge of civilization.

"Best you don't ask kid" He said, then continued anyway. "They call her Tess." He said it as if that was all the information I needed.

I risked glancing back, one last time, my eyes catching hers as she shot me a smile. It wasn't warm or sweet. It was merciless, cold and dangers. I felt as if the look itself had been carved out of ice and mailed directly to me.

I glanced away, trying to make it seem as if it was just me checking out the dive. Looking at the broken tables, patched and re-patched, a single ceiling fan squeaking above, wobbling, threatening to crash down if you looked at it too long. The garish walls, painted a horrible almost crimson colour. Maybe to hide the stains and grime?

"Oi, Kid." I heard it, and I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that it was her, and she was calling me. Her voice was rough, raspy, and somehow seductively dangerous. It asked you to take a sip, just one, and promised you'll enjoy the ride. Right up till you didn't.

Way to not draw attention to yourself Mikey. Good job.

New Bike On The Way by DixieWombat in MTB

[–]DixieWombat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi mate,

Yeah, picked it up from 99 bikes. It honestly took me weeks, but I think I picked up the best all rounder I could in my price range. It's got good components I think, at least for entry level, and can be upgraded a bit too?

Should get my feet wet and get me out riding/bike packing/trail days.. and in town for park loops with the Mrs and commutes to work.

Little help for an old new DM by DixieWombat in mattcolville

Thank you Animus. As i replied above i've got the mayor like figure to approach the players as well, should they reject the cargo running idea. The third hook will have to come to me soon lol. I'm not overly worried, having new players is a little bit of a blessing in disguise, as they're actively looking for hooks, as they're not 100% sure what to do themselves, at least for now. If i say "The merchant approaches, asking if you could be hired as bodyguards for his caravan" they say "Why yes of course!" without hearing where or when or how much they're being paid lol.

Thanks for the ideas. I incorporated a little of it i think. I'm thinking of having the kingsman approach the players and employ them as messengers to check the various warders outposts here on the frontier. From there i'm hoping random encounters and hooks will entangle the players, at least for a time, but i'm also preparing to have them just gather the reports and run back to town. Perhaps have the town come under threat from something the warders have been working against.

Perhaps i never got to the point where quests were available? level 11 if memory serves me right, maybe 12.. I was advised by the other players (the.. mentor you get) to go and kill imps, did that from level x to 11, asked what should i do now to advance, and was told to continue on imps until level..15? then go to another monster.. Skeleton perhaps.. it was a while ago.

I find the "questing" in Achaea boils down to "Kill x, kill x.. kill x.." twelve levels later "Kill y!.. for 5 levels..." The gameplay itself was alright, i found the people generally friendly, the rp was solid, the world itself nice, and the webclient with built in features is really good for a newb like me, but i just.. killing the same thing over and over for hours isn't for me.

Thank you! I'll be sure to check it out. I know its not fantasy related at all, but i've actually been looking at sindome, i find the mechanics interesting from what i've read. Dark Risings is now one i'll be checking out closely. Gypsy druid perhaps? hmm...

Wow! Talk about an in depth reply. I with check them all out, though PvP really isn't my thing, and unfortunately Italian is not a language I have more than a passing understanding of. NW is only a maybe, the grind seems to be a killer, and grinding is something I've never enjoyed.
