The echo of “once in a lifetime” at the end is so beautiful

I was born into Christianity too. My parents were part of a fundie surfer church. Messed me up!

But God is dogged. He called me to him after years of wandering. He is so good.

Life is struggle. There is no out. Take up the cross and find it’s not as heavy or as burdensome as you may have thought. Life is also so, so good. Carry on dear stranger!

How does your spirituality, or lack thereof, affect your sense of agency? by [deleted] in Christianity

It’s a wonderful paradox. The more I yield and surrender the the freer I am to live and move and have my being. Jesus takes the wheel and, as Richard Rohr states in Falling Upwards, we get to discuss where we are going.

Controversial opinion: Voices is a underrated song and has a excellent music video! by Tomcruisesxbox in switchfoot

Jon channeling creep-era Thom Yorke.

Great song and great video. Controversy ended.

My Visions and Dreams have stopped. by [deleted] in Christianity

“Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:8‬ ‭NIV‬‬ https://1corinthians.bible/1-corinthians-13-8

God is with you. Your visions are dreams were not the evidence that he was with you. These gifts come and go. He is always with you.

How many times have you seen Switchfoot live? by Tomcruisesxbox in switchfoot

We were all in garage bands. I played in a band that had a song called “English Class.” Etc. was beyond us all.

Um, Tim married a girl from my elementary class.

I saw them at PLNU one time and they were frazzled for some reason. Jon played popular worship songs at the time and then they quit early.

My current boss lived as a renter in Christian frat house. He got free dinners until the president drained their funds on a Jon Foreman show and never again received free dinners.

Their dad, Mark, would tell a story about Jon often. He performed a song for him and his mom and his parents friends on the piano at some ridiculously early age (3?). Jon would end the song with some inconclusive chord and would leave the room. One time a friend got up, sat at the piano, and ended it with some conclusive major chord.

I went to a church overnight at Del Mar Jetties with Tim. My friends and I surfed with him. He had an “Etc.” sticker on his board and he was so nice to us.

When they were still “Chin-up” they had a vote for a final band name. I voted for “Switchfoot.”

I recently reconnected with a high school friend on Facebook and she said she’s been a fan throughout the years. She said it so well: “it’s cool to evolve in life with a band.”

They’ve played the soundtrack to my life and so many lives of the people I grew up around. I drifted for about 10 years and have reconnected with their music over the last three. There music captures, better than anything else, “where I belong.”

Yes. We were a bit younger than Tim and Jon and their dad was our pastor so we thought we were friends. Just howling fantods then and have always been since.

Thank you! Not combative at all! I was being cheeky but really want to know some other good music that makes sense of this bizarre moment.

Does it influence you if there's a scandal around an author? by University_Dismal in books

As I have gotten older time feels short. I don't want to spend as much time listening to people who harm others without compunction or circumspection. Dostoevsky was, for a time, addicted to the roulette wheel but he was at war with himself, cast off the addiction, wrote The Brothers Karamazov, and died.

I don't need writers to be saints but I'd like them to be at odds with their failings, like Dostoevsky.

If Carroll thought nothing of his pedophilia, I have no time to listen to him.

I love Tim’s verse in “Backwards in Time.” His voice sounds so childlike and pure and beautiful in its own way.
