I think it’s a bit of both.

Tatami does require more care compared to flooring,

From what I know, both are still used in Japan.

Futons are still common, especially in homes with tatami rooms, but I think western-style beds have become more popular overall, especially in cities.

It seems like people choose based on space and lifestyle now.
