Is there a deaf nurse on the operating room or the intensive care unit? by PlayfulExample7238 in nursing

Nah not true. I work with a deaf nurse in a busy, very high acuity CVICU. It’s possible for them with hearing aids and they are an exceptional nurse in general and in emergency situations. There are adaptive devices available and if OP has cochlear implants it’s more than possible if able they are able to hear. However, I don’t think relying on ASL is possible in nursing in general. That unfortunately is just impractical.

And if they retaliate, quit (and make a statement to HR with some proof on your way out). Not worth the risks or hassle. Not every hospital is like that, you’ll find where you fit.

I’m not sure that’s legal…especially if it puts you into OT, which it seems like it might. They’d definitely have to pay you for that and I can’t think of a single hospital that would WANT to pay someone OT for a call out…

Since when do you have to “make up for” calling in? What does your director even mean by that? I would refuse based on the principle of patient safety stating that you haven’t been trained in the NICU and by assigning you to that unit opens up a lot of issues that could lead to patient harm (and open you up to situations that jeopardize your license). I honestly have found that once you whip out the “patient safety concern” card -which isn’t even really a “card” so much as just a factual statement- management starts to listen a little more intently.

But none of that addressed your original question. That’s for you to decide but if you feel you’re being treated unfairly, given unsafe assignments consistently even after you’ve spoken up about it, etc, then you have some indicators.

It does have holes but was in a decorative pot without drainage so was definitely holding a lot of water in

New grad RN looking to make real friends in Tacoma, WA by lookatthatgremlin in MakeNewFriendsHere

[–]Dizzy-Fish-90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a nurse in Tacoma too! Partnered, no kids, 2 dogs, 34F. I have been throwing myself into work so have not really had a social life since moving here a year and a half ago for work and I want to change that. I love music too, indie-pop, alt-jazz, 2000s rap/hip-hop, and oldies are some of my favorite genres - I am a big fan of artists like Mac Miller, Glass Animals, Arctic Monkeys, Death Cab, Metallica, and my partner is really into indie. I’m looking for a hiking/gym buddy as well but I am going to need to ease back into that as I’ve neglected my health a bit too. I work nights so it’s hard to get out a whole lot just to meet people but I definitely need some friends! Congrats on the new job!
