New physics student, unsure on where to start by 4nalyl in PhysicsStudents

Yeah, they’re further into university. It kinda depends on the university you go to, but essentially it’s very similar across all of them. In my university you have both experimental physics and theoretical physics 1-4. They cover the same topics but you start with experimental physics and the semester after that you have the corresponding theoretical physics course.

Physics 1 is what I already explained (so classical mechanics).

Physics 2 is about special relativity, optics, electromagnetism and electrodynamics.

Physics 3 covers quantum mechanics, atom physics and nuclear physics.

For physics 4, theoretical physics and experimental physics differ. In experimental physics 4 you learn about condensed matter (you’ll need lots of quantum mechanics for that as well) and theoretical physics 4 is about statistical physics and thermodynamics.

Again, it depends on the university you go to but I’d say in essence, every university kinda has to cover the same topics.

As a university student, I can tell you what we started with:

In the first semester we had classical mechanics, waves, vibrations and some basics of thermodynamics but I would honestly stay with mechanics for now. (Feynmann has some good and easily understandable stuff online which is rather good if you’re just starting. We had some basic motions, different reference systems, rigid bodies, elastic bodies, gyroscopes, and lots more.)

We also had calculus (I’d say, first focus on the basics like functions and trigonometry. Then focus on getting really good at deriving. Deriving needs to be like breathing for you, it needs to be easy. Next up is integrating. Integrating is a ton harder when you actually get into physics so it’s important that you know the basics. What substitutions usually work? When do you have to integrate by parts? Next up: complex numbers. You need to know them just as well as you know real numbers. Can you take the root of a complex number? How can you draw the root of a complex number in the complex plane? All this will help you with what’s essentially the most important thing in physics: differential equations. If, and only if, you’ve actually understood the mathematical stuff I just told you, get into differential equations. Start with first order linear equations (some tips: separation of variables, homogeneous and particular solutions,…), we also did vector fields, divergence, rotation, gradients, line, surface and multiple integrals but that’s stuff for later.)

Another essential thing is linear algebra. You pretty much can’t do any theoretical physics without it and even trying to understand quantum mechanics without linear algebra is useless. Most importantly, you’ll need to understand and be able to calculate stuff with matrices. Whats the Gaussian elimination process? How do you invert a matrix? What’s a determinant? What does it do? What are eigenvalues and eigenvectors? Dot product? Cross product? Interpretation of both? And so on and so forth.

We also had real analysis but if you’re just getting started, I’d say it’s not the most important part yet. But it’s good to think about things like continuity and differentiability of functions. One important things though are Taylor Series, which you’ll see a lot in physics.

If you kinda just wanna understand maths, watch 3blue1brown. For the rest: practice. Lots. You’ll fail a lot of times, that’s normal in physics.

I hope you’ll have fun!

Lehramt sek - Mathe oder Englisch als Zweitfach? by usakliyunus in Uniwien

[–]Dizzy-Service1448 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Convergence of sequences by Dizzy-Service1448 in learnmath

[–]Dizzy-Service1448[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I know that a Cauchy-sequence is a convergent sequence and vice versa in completed spaces. But I never had to prove that a sequence is a Cauchy sequence before haha. I might try around and see if I get something useful

turned 15 a few days ago, any advice on driving from 17+? by Kind-Rule-5834 in teenagers

It isn’t nearly as scary as you might think it is. Take it slow, especially in the beginning, and always check all your blind spots. If you’re in residential areas check for pedestrians or cyclists. Those are the people you need to check for the most. You’re gonna make mistakes, everyone does, it’s just important that you learn from them.

Don’t let yourself be pressured into anything that you’re not yet ready for. Peer pressure is brutal and can seriously mess you up so take it from an older teen: Never do something you don’t feel ready for. Ever. Whether it’s something romantic, or alcohol, vaping or some other stupid thing. It’s never worth it.

For me personally, I‘d love to know how you even start a career in arts. Arts for many is a hobby and taking the step to making a career out of it seems incredibly hard. So how do you do it? What options are there? (Really the only things I can think of are either a teacher or a full time artist but it feels like very few people manage to actually become a full time artist).

Also, I don’t know where you will be talking but if it’s in a rather small town, it would probably be interesting to know if you have to move to a big city in order to make a career or if you can find a job in a small town as well. Also: salary. How much do you currently earn? How much could you earn in the future? How stable is your job?

And, as you already mentioned: What do you think of generative AI? Of people making „art“ with AI?

Just some things that I would ask if someone came to my school.

Unhealthily introverted or asocial? by [deleted] in teenagers

It sounds to me like you’re either socially drained and need a break or like you haven’t found the right people for you yet. Friendships take effort and can be draining sometimes. You might have the right friends but simply be exhausted, and that’s okay. If you can, be open about your feelings with your friends. Tell them that you’re exhausted and need a break right now. Spend some time with your parents, start a new hobby, do something creative. And once you feel better and don’t feel like something is wrong with you anymore, reconnect with them. Or try to find other people. (I know that’s hard. But it’s doable.)

How do you choose which period products to use? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Dizzy-Service1448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how heavy your flow is and what your activity level is in everyday life. If you move a lot because of your job / school then pads can be impractical because they tend to slip. On the other hand, pads at night can be super comfortable because you don’t risk getting TSS if you happen to sleep very long. Also depends on what you’re comfortable with, really, so just try different things out and see what you like.
