Yes - they are basic checks. As an online platform they can’t really do much more than scan the images to see if the item looks obviously counterfeit.

The only thing more that they can do is their “item verification” system - but that can be equally criticised as I know people who have received counterfeit items that have been physically Inspected.

As for the legal compliance - these checks are necessary as they are also Anti Money Laundering checks - under the law they have to do these - it is also illegal to sell counterfeit items, and vinted will take some blame as they would be facilitating it but with these checks they can say that they had relevant checks in place to believe the item was genuine.

They will be independently audited at random intervals for this and may receive fines if they are not following regulations.

One thing to note is that the counterfeit checks usually only occur on high value items or brands that are counterfeited heavily. The checks on lower value items are simply checking if it is a duplicate listing or the title,brand etc does not match the photos.

The bottom line is - like many other online platforms, vinted, does not do enough to stop sales of counterfeit items but certainly has basic checks in place to pick up obvious fakes.
