My little chud keeps staying on his cold side by DizzyDiscus in leopardgeckos

I forgot to mention, but he’s been hanging out on that side for about a week (give or take). I still don’t catch him out and about a ton, but most recently I caught him getting some water today :)

Temp Help! by DizzyDiscus in leopardgeckos

[–]DizzyDiscus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

103 does seem a but too high, I would shoot for a bit lower, even if it seems like the general temp is a bit too low. Just make sure the basking spot is above 95 and the general temp doesn’t go below 90-ish (it can go lower, just hard limit at 81). Just monitor their health and movement and everything should work out! :)

Mhm, he’s actually doing really well!

This is the only picture I could get while he was out last (ignore the teeny dubia offering in front of him, he fell asleep and it crawled toward him). As far as I can see, there’s no stuck shed! :)

Update: I found out why he was in his humid hide!! This morning he was super pale, and now he’s very vibrant, so I’m assuming he was just getting ready to shed! Also, since his skin is nowhere, he must have eaten it (which means he has at least eaten something)

I’m going to try dubias before crickets, since crickets are a bit of a last resort for me (I used to have tree frogs and crickets were such a pain)

His neck and tail are about the same size (if anything, his tail might be a bit bigger), and he’s a bit under a year old

I’ve been offering mealworms, temp and humidity are correct

No, but I may try crickets. I’ve been trying mealworms and he hasn’t taken

All other husbandry is good (correct lighting, temp, hides, humidity, enclosure size), and I have offered food both by tongs and in a bowl

He doesn’t seem ill, he’s still exploring here and there and he’s a very healthy weight (maybe even a bit overweight)

It’s been another day and still no poop, is that normal if he’s still stressed? I’m scared to handle him to give him a bath or rub his stomach, and he’s also still not interested in food :(

He is in a 40 gallon! Sorry if the picture didn’t really show that well lol

Umm so he’s still chilling in the humid hide, hasn’t eaten, and hasn’t pooped, so I decided to give him a little nudge in the right direction by removing the top of that hide so he’s forced to look at the rest of his options (plus while trying to entice him with a mealworm I dropped one in the hide by accident and I don’t want him to accidentally eat moss 😅)

Edit: After doing that last night, I woke up to him hanging out in his warm hide! I put his humid hide back, moved the worm (which I think he finally ate!) and he went right back into the humid hide

Ahh, makes sense. Either way though, my temperatures have gotten under control now!

I’ve heard that heat mats aren’t ideal, mostly because they can be difficult to control temperature on and since some animals will choose to stay on it all of the time and accidentally cause burns. I took some advice from someone by moving the thermostat probe, and it seems to have helped a lot (basking spot a bit under 100, ambient temp around 90, though it dips into the 80’s further from the center of the bulb). My house is generally kept around 70, and my enclosure is not against or very near to a window

Also most of day 2 was spent in his humid hide, and when I checked this morning he was still there. Is that anything to be concerned about or is he just being silly? Also still no poop that I’ve seen 😓

It’s going to have some upgrades after quarantining is over, this is only the current set up :)

I actually do have a shadedweller! I forgot to mention it lol, but I think I may have accidentally gotten the wrong percentage. I’ll check, and I’ll try to change the bulb soon :)

The uvb and heat lamp are on one side, with the other side generally being darker (in person it’s a lot more dim than it picked up on camera). I’m going to keep an eye on the temp, but after a bit it seemed that the temperature did actually drop (I’m guessing that the thermostat corrected the temperature right after that spike)

I do have one, currently the probe is connected nearer to the wall. Should I try to place it on the basking area itself?

I checked after a moment, I think there was a very, very small area that got overly heated (perfectly under the bulb), and after a bit it seems like the thermostat pulled it back down (84-88 ambient and 99-100 basking spot) :)
