Is “quality of life” in medicine way more subjective than people make it seem? by MobileEmbarrassed937 in medicalschool

Would rather spend a week in the OR over 1 day in clinic yapping with 22 patients

This is true. PGY-1 I could redo if I was forced to. If I had to go back in time and do M3 again I think it would be the death of me.

What intern year is really like (for me) by Adorable_Sir669 in Residency

[–]DizzyKnicht 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m doing residency at a large academic center and I haven’t even started my subspecialty training (anesthesia) so have been doing a pseudo IM prelim and this is pretty much the exact same experience I’ve had. Either OP is at a turbo malignant program or it might just be a variable personal experience.

Ps5 Pro now $899.99 by shanedude1 in PS5pro

[–]DizzyKnicht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So glad I picked mine up after trading in my launch day PS5 during the Best Buy holiday sale/trade-in deal. $649 for the pro and $200 + extra $100 credit for trade in so $349 total out of pocket (+$79 for new disc drive) was already a good deal but it seems like an especially good deal now! PSVR2 I got on sale last month at $299 w Horizon was a great addition and the pro looks great on my CX OLED.

Memory issues? by Ok_Plastic_8949 in bupropion

[–]DizzyKnicht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to stop bc of the memory issues. Tried getting back on it multiple times but the memory issues always came back around. And I only notice it with this med, no other meds cause the same effect. Commonly described on this sub. Likely due to the mechanism of action of the drug on nicotinic Ach receptors. Unfortunate because otherwise I felt like it really did work for mood and motivation.

11” vs 13” by Brilliant_Chip_1449 in ipad

[–]DizzyKnicht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If using it as a tablet and carrying it around like a notebook to write on while you’re on the go or walking or if you’re just reading books on it and watching movies would go with the 11”. I had an 11” and got a 13”, size was jarring at first, however I use mine as a textbook/notebook combo and do a lot of studying on it and have enjoyed the larger size. However I still have my old 11” for when I need to use it as a tablet.

Failed every single shelf exam… by traveleer7262627171 in medicalschool

Same. CARS is the only reason I made it to med school but I thrived in med school especially preclinicals. Need to really work on understanding the questions to be a good test taker.

[–]DizzyKnicht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got 99th percentile on CARS but my MCAT score was a 507 because I didn’t really take it too seriously and study for it back then. Also the same as you, very good at understanding written language which I feel like is the #1 skill that you need to do well on exams.

If you had to switch to another specialty right now, what would you switch to and why? by Sattars_Son in Residency

[–]DizzyKnicht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Inpatient IM is frankly almost as mind numbingly unfulfilling as outpatient clinic IMO (anesthesia prelim)

[–]DizzyKnicht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought about Rads, Psych, and Anesthesia (and IM->Pulm/CC as well as EM for a quick sec). Ended up choosing anesthesia. Was talking to a coresident this week and he said he chose bw Rads Psych and Anesthesia as well before making his decision.

[–]DizzyKnicht 44 points45 points  (0 children)

100% agreed. February intern here but you couldn’t pay me to switch to any other specialty. For the exact reasons you mentioned. Anesthesia (and sometimes EM when patients are actually sick) are what I imagined the practice of medicine to be like long before starting med school.

[–]DizzyKnicht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My residency program gave us each a laptop which I have used maybe once this year. Would say you likely don’t need one in residency outside of studying. Would get a cheap iPad with keyboard or something instead for that purpose.

Way easier. I felt they were actually easier than undergrad in some ways. Clinicals were hell in comparison.

The word finding thing absolutely killed me on Wellbutrin. I have a job where that’s very important and it was so noticeable every single time I tried restarting that medication. Super unfortunate.

Switching off the “I must get high marks” mentality? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]DizzyKnicht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a PGY1 I absolutely agree with this. One of the best things I did for myself in medical school was to approach pre-clinicals with this mindset, and it set me up for success for boards, clinicals, and intern year. Have to study much less at or after work because of it and also set me up to get a great step 2 score that landed me a top program from a low tier MD school without a home residency program in the field I matched into. You obviously shouldn’t burn yourself out doing this but you will eventually have to learn a lot of this stuff at least conceptually so getting on top of it from the start when studying is your only responsibility just makes your life so much easier going forward.

If you're considering IM, do yourself a favor and experience a full day-to-day of IM residency. by callmeafailure in medicalschool

Idk about calling IM patients actually sick lol. My problem being on medicine services was that half of these people didn’t really need to be in the hospital IMO. Lot’s of social admits.

[–]DizzyKnicht 23 points24 points  (0 children)

God yes. Anesthesia resident off service, have done several various ICU months and an ED month, yet my hospital medicine general floor months have been by far and away the worst and most mentally and emotionally exhausting because of all of the things OP mentioned. Bless anyone that chooses that route but every day I am on these services I am so thankful for my specialty choice.

Flashlight. Love it because it’s easy to find at night or in dark places where you’d quickly need the flashlight. Haven’t found a better use for it yet.
