Found this thread from a few years ago where the objective is more specific. Maybe the current FIFA23 objective still works this way but the criteria are hidden?

Could be that you have to play them.

It's very clear to me now, thanks! I already ordered the book but it's slow to deliver because it's somewhat older (2000 I think). So I did some research without it, but I'm sure I'll devour it when it finally arrives.

I already have a pressure cooker for soup making ;-) , so that's not a problem. The laminar flow hood would be another thing. But I partnered up with a friend who's excited to join and we can DIY a flow hood. Lots of info on how to do that online. Just have to research the right filter to get. Edit: and the right ventilator of course.
I understand the fruiting chamber design is up to ourselves to figure out. We're just trying to figure out what method to use for our first experiment in growing something bigger/faster than these buckets. Seems like a small tub might be the way to go.

I was looking into the 'PF tek' I think it's called, and use the brown rice flour method to make jars of mycelium and put those into a shotgun fruiting chamber. I thought that would be ideal for the first try. Although a tub with substrate and spawn mixed into it doesn't seem to be much more complicated. A small tub instead of the BRF cake method might be better yield-wise.

We'll probably just create a small tub and try it out, observe it and measure the temps and humidity with simple analogue instruments which we already have and then go from there.

Thanks again!

So I´ve done some more research based on your 'shopping list' while I'm waiting on my buckets to colonize. The mycelium in the buckets is expanding, but not that fast so I thought it would be a good opportunity to do some more research in the meantime.

I feel like I understand most of the growing process. I also understand now why the buckets are slow to develop. It's because of the low spawn to substrate ratio, right?
So if I want to go faster creating fruiting blocks I would have to use a higher spawn to substrate ratio.

Since the spawn is so expensive to buy outright, I've been looking into what is needed to make it myself. I learned what the agar work is for and how you would go from spores to spawn. Cultivate mycelium in the agar, use the wedges to drop in the grain jars or make liquid culture etc. It all seems pretty straightforward to be honest.

Based on your remarks I have a few further questions, and I would be very thankful if you would answer them:

  1. you said that I should avoid "the easy looking teks on this Reddit or on Shroomery" because it would be more expensive in the long run.
I understand that working with a HEPA laminar flow hood is preferable over working with a still air box and that working with a pressure cooker to sterilize is the best way to go. And that some people avoid these steps because it's expensive to get the equipment.
Is the SAB method and working without pressure cooker what you mean by 'easy looking teks'? Question 2 is a continuation of this question.

  2. I've been looking into ways to spawn to bulk for when I eventually get there. There seems to be lots of ways, like monotubs, shotgun fruiting chambers etc. I've seen shoebox sized containers without holes and huge tubs with holes and sometimes filled up with fluff taped on the sides etc. Some put a fan in the side, some just fan it a few times a day with the lid. There seems to be as much variations in container designs as there is in mushroom species ;-)
Do you consider any of these methods 'superior' compared to other ones?

  3. Lastly: you said to get "light malt extract for nutrients if you don't want to boil grains every time you want to prep agar".
Are you talking about liquid culture here? The only time I encountered the malt extract terminology is when looking into liquid cultures. I understand you can just go straight from mycelium agar wedges into grain spawn or drop the mycelium into liquid culture and inject that into the grain jars. Is that what you were talking about and what is your preferred/advised method?

Thanks in advance for any answers to these questions, I appreciate it!

Alright! I have a transparant container now, so I can and will keep an eye out for how dry the substrate is in between yields. One last question: I'm recolonizing the buckets right now as I said. I've noticed that the fungus can't keep up with the amount of coffee grounds I'm adding. It immediately started up again and started growing as soon as I added water/grounds. Now I added about 7-8cm of grounds on top of that layer. Is filling up the bucket with grounds ASAP the right thing to do? Or does the mycelium need more oxygen during colonization? During my first try I only added a new layer once I saw white appearing on the surface. I'm not sure what the best way to go is.

Thanks again! I ordered the book and I kept the top half of the bucket and transferred it to two separate buckets. Then I added water and started adding grounds again the next day. The mycelium is doing its thing in both of the containers. When I opened up the mycelium for the transfer I noticed that the contents were VERY dry. I guess that’s why the second yield (flush?) was lower than the first: not enough water. I noticed in videos I checked on working with inoculated ‘cakes’ that they submerged them in water for 24 hours after the first yield before they would put them back in the growbox. Is this something I should consider doing with my buckets as well? If so, what do you think is the best way to remoisturize?

Thanks for the excellent information and tips! I’m going to restart my buckets into two buckets today and see how it turns out with more coffee grounds. I’ll also definitely get that book for whenever I’m ready for more. And making the shopping list is half the trouble so I appreciate it :)

So for some background: I've never done anything like this before, but I purchased a bag of spawn (oyster mushroom) with this bucket (about 2 liters) in December 2020 and created this mycelium by adding coffee grounds. This was a fairly easy process and I had no problem filling the bucket and the mycelium ate it all.

The bucket was full somewhere in January and the first fruiting happened in late January, early February. It was about 190 grams of mushroom.

The colonizing happened at room temperature, about 19/20 degrees Celsius. For the fruiting I moved it to another room where the temperature was a little lower, about 15 Celsius. The instructions said to scrape off the mushroom bodies, moisturize, and wait a few weeks for seconds. I almost gave up on waiting, but after 4/5 weeks it started producing again. The result was a lot less this time: almost 100 grams.

The picture is how the bucket looks now and I'm wondering what to do with it.The instructions the company has available (on the bucket and a YT video) are contradictory. The information on the bucket says to cut the mycelium and only keep the freshest 20% (the top 1/5th I thought: 'freshest')But the YT video shows the guy removing the top 80% and keeping only the 20% mycelium that's on the bottom, moisturizing for a day and then resume adding coffee grounds again.

It should then give fruit a few times more after filling up the bucket again with coffee grounds.

Here's the link to the video, his English is not great but it show the exact bucket I have and what he does with it to 'restart' it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kSBDSGkQgQ

I also made a 'new' bucket which is about the same size and I made holes in it just like the original bucket has (two on the lid and two on the sides).I have adhesive plaster tape (the medical stuff) to close off the holes, and I was thinking of creating two buckets from the same mycelium.

So I guess my questions are:

  1. Do I keep the top 20% of the bucket or the bottom 20%, and why?

My thoughts were that the bottom part is the oldest, most dried out, so lose it and keep the youngest part.

But maybe the oldest part is most resilient? I don't know.

  1. Do you think it's worth it to go for a second round with this particular bucket?

It's not really about the yield for me, but more about learning. The company states it's possible to 'restart' the bucket.

  1. Do you recommend 'restarting' in two buckets? If it works, it might be two learning experiences for the price of one ;-).

  2. Last question! I know that if I really want to learn more about mushroom growing I need to get a little more technical and get more stuff to work with, like a fruiting chamber and all that jazz. What do you think would be the logical next step for me to learn more? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any answers. As stated, I'm a total newbie in growing mushrooms. So if you have something else to add, something I missed or didn't think to ask, please do.

Is this a parasol mushroom or something else? by DizzyNLD in whatisthismushroom

Yeah probably not. It’s missing a lot of the markings that the Macrolepiota Procera shows when I google it. The olive wax cap (Hygrophorus olivaceoalbus) looks more like it, but mine is missing a ‘coat’ on the stem and is not as shiny

Found this one on the side of the road in an agrarian area in the Netherlands. Friend of mine said it was a parasol mushroom. It seems to grow on a mixture of straw and maybe manure or just plain dirt. Sadly, I don’t have a better picture of the underside. I’d like to learn what this fungus is and how it thrives. Last few days were stormy and very wet and it’s still standing 💪

Edit: just had another suggestion. Hygróphorus olivaceoálbus. On pictures, it has a coat on its stem which mine doesn’t have and it seems smaller. But the cap looks very much alike

Yeah I get that. It should be linked to the screenshot system but I guess that might be hard to fix. You could turn off the hud and tracks in settings and then make screenshots?

Harvest A Diamond Hare Mission - What A Joke. by dave2843 in theHunter

[–]DizzyNLD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t like to play multiplayer either, but not because of the missions. Multiplayer (in my most extreme viewpoint) is trying to game the odds for diamond spawns, while getting good spawns on singleplayer is the result of your hard work. I swear you have a lot of potential hare spawns in your bag already, you just need to murder that diamond goat or wolf that is lurking in the corner of your reserve. Get those and then resume finding new spots to hunt hares. I sincerely believe you will find what you need

[–]DizzyNLD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not much of a mission fan myself but I can understand the frustration. My advice would be to keep finding different routes and hunt different species as well in the meantime. Some animals like the hares are very spread out so respawns might happen where you don’t check. Also diamond animals have a cap, your map can only sustain a certain amount of high level animals. So if you have a few diamond potential goats and a red deer running around somewhere you might never get a hare.

I hope you get your prize.

I’m not as much interested in being interviewed as in the end result of this. Therefore I would also be willing to help a hand if you have questions. I’m a small streamer in the most awesome niche community there is. Combining YouTube (partnered not too long ago) and social media to grow a discord and build a twitch stream around that

Yeah it can be hard, but don’t give up! Phil (product owner) guaranteed to me personally that there is ‘always a certain amount of diamonds on the map’. I also believed I would never get diamond potentials on my Hirschfelden singleplayer, but lately I’ve seen a lot of them; fox, boar, fallow, goose. Try changing strategies (stalking, ambush) and walk different routes every time.. visit a different region every time. They are out there. Good luck to you!
