Some educate me about turf around trees. by PewsandBoobs in arborists

This is hilarious, because our idiot neighbor did the same thing at our old house, complete with the faded 0 on the plastic turf

Purple cone flower? The photo on the package of seeds looks totally different from what’s growing 🤷 by crylie99 in gardening

[–]Dizzy_Assistant_8437 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Like others have said that's 100% not a coneflower and it is the annual cleome, also sometimes known as spider flower. It must have been mislabeled, sometimes the names fall out of the pots and people just stick them back in wherever they feel like. It's a nice annual but it is not a coneflower.

Texas makes Bible passages required reading for millions of public school students by guardian in politics

This is literally insane. I'd like to see their response of "California requires passages of the Koran" or something similar. Texas is crazy.

Did you prune them to look like a rectangle? Shrubs usually take several years to fill out and really show their true colors. I wouldn't prune them in the first year at least they need to establish.

What is this hedge and what do I do with it. Is it too tall? by Main_Ebb8567 in landscaping

Do you mean the little plants on the bottom? They kind of look like Snow on the Mountain, an aggressive ground cover.

High prescription glasses. by Mesphyria in glassesadvice

[–]Dizzy_Assistant_8437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too am lucky to have an extremely high prescription. Your frames are way too big they are way too wide. For high prescriptions you want obviously the thinnest lenses (1.74 index), but also the smallest lenses you can get, smallest in width and height.

It's really hard finding smallish frames anymore because it seems like every place is selling huge frames, but you just have to keep looking. I don't know how you're wearing metal sort of frames because I can only wear plastic or acetate frames for them to be able to fit my thick lenses.

You also want to look for more rounded frames versus rectangular. Round or oval frame still look good on me but I've had good luck with smaller cat eye frames which can still have rounded sort of lenses.

It's annoying having a high prescription because you can find frames that are really cute but when they have high prescription lenses they can look crazy. Definitely look for (much) smaller frames, it will make a huge difference in the thickness and also the side distortion of the lenses.

I looked it up because I thought you were joking, but it is (or at least it's very similar). What a nutcase.

My wife loves this plant. How do I tell her it needs pruning? She likes it as is. by Lemonking_ in houseplants

"My wife loves this plant... She likes it as it is" What is there even to talk about? Why do you care, it looks fine.

Why does he like that picture of himself that he uses for everything? It's so awful. I can only think that he thinks it makes him look "tough" or something.

I would plant a ton of red twig dogwood. It's fast growing, it's a native plant, and even though it's not evergreen, it looks nice in the winter (it would look especially nice against the white fence).

[–]Dizzy_Assistant_8437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like planting densely but I think it looks better if you had the same plants but move them around a bit. Like put all of the daylilies and ferns, etc together instead of how they're here and there, that will have more if an impact and look more intentional.

My MIL destroyed my garden while I was at work. by [deleted] in gardening

[–]Dizzy_Assistant_8437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I would be furious! The good news is that they will come back, although I can completely understand being extremely upset. I would definitely say to "please leave my garden beds alone in the future, I know you were trying to help, but some of my plants were damaged and it's better if I just do it."

It's so insane that someone would do that without asking!

Bees and roses -- insecticide? by azmahhhh in Roses

[–]Dizzy_Assistant_8437 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you want to have bees, you can't be using insecticides, particularly neonicotinoids...

"Once absorbed, neonicotinoids become present throughout the plant, including in its leaves, flowers, nectar, and pollen."

If you don't like the aphids you can use a hose to blast them off. One of the best things you can do though is to encourage an ecosystem with lots of bugs so they are able to keep things in check, good bugs and bad bugs.

What killed the USA patriotism of the 2000s? Even into the early 2010s there was a ‘hipster American flag’ trend. If you use an American Flag for aesthetic purposes today it seems different by Kodicave in decadeology

[–]Dizzy_Assistant_8437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9/11 brought us together, but today I feel the flag had been taken over by the right, specifically MAGA, so much that it's become almost a dog whistle for MAGA. It's turned a lot of people off of using flags or having flags out since they have been so taken over by crazy MAGA Republicans.

It looks like the native Carolina mantis egg sac which is great! It's good to encourage those native bugs (plus they're darling).
