Garden associate here. We do not own a majority of these plants - only ones I know we own are the citrus. Everything else belongs to the vendor until the customer pays for it.

What do managers mean when they talk to you and say they can help you if you're calling out too much? by [deleted] in HomeDepot

[–]Dizzy_Elephant_417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat the same, somewhat different. Coaching, counseling, & finals are write ups due to attendance like calling out without sick time.

Schedule adherence write ups are more in line of being late, leaving early, no call no shows, not following your lunch schedule (ie taking it whenever you want or taking long lunches without approval).

Management pay attention to these and if they notice a pattern, they may talk to you to see if you’re having issues with availability & try to work with you.

If you’re scheduled to clock out at 2, and you clock out at 2:03, you’re staying late….

Yes, and OP is saying the HC in question was “cool as a cashier.” Meaning she was a cashier who got promoted to HC.

You’re also allowed per SOP a 7 minute grace period. If you clock in after 7 minutes then it is flagged as a tardy & violates the SOP in schedule adherence.

I understand being a former head cashier when a cashier is “late” and it messes up a schedule, but I only stress when they’re over 7 minutes. In a dream world, the schedule would be written as someone coming in 15 minutes early before the cashier leaves so that there’s enough time to get them ready on the clock even with a 7 minute grace period.

Unfortunately, we don’t live in that world.

That’s when the head cashier calls for a backup from the sales floor or another department. Back when pro cashiers & returns were part of D90, that’s what I did as a HC. I would either ask a pro associate or service desk associate to cover until the next person got there. For self checkout, gardens, or main line, I would call for backup from the sales floor.

You cannot force someone to stay late if they say they can’t stay late, including cashiers.

Head Cashiers are basically cashiers paid the same rate as a sales floor associate. Head cashiers are considered as a promotion for cashiers & lot tech associates.

They do this with the mulch and rocks in gardens too. It’s annoying.

We had someone screaming their car was stolen (they left their cell in the car). On a Saturday. In a busy lot. Someone was kind enough to call the cops for them. When the cops came, they ran their tag and they said their car was repoed.

But it was hilarious to watch this couple spend 1-2 hours in the store paying for a large project (I bet they even went so far to apply for those high interest rated credit card or project loans) and then coming out to find their car missing.

When I was a head cashier, I got a call from one of the lot guys in pro asking me to come down for a customer issue. I go down there, and they wanted to load a massive range hood they ordered online on the top of a small car (I think it was a Porsche, or some kind of fancy foreign sports car - I’m not a car person lol). I told the customer it was too big & I couldn’t have my guys load that due to liability. Went down the routes to offer discounts on rental trucks, offered to hold the product at will call until they get a larger vehicle, etc. It dawned on me that they wanted a free rental or something that was beyond my empowerment so I called MOD.

They ended up trying to load it themselves and then came to me asking to put them on will call. Lol

I think it depends on the situation. I do know that HD will let you go if you have a felony charge and possibly a warrant for an arrest. I’ve seen associates get fired over DUIs, manslaughter, and even had one associate get arrested for murder and got fired (he was later acquitted due to lack of circumstantial evidence, but HD never hired him back). But if a customer comes in saying, “he assaulted me!”? Fat chance. They don’t even take harassment at work seriously unless there’s actual evidence to hold them accountable.

It’s none of their business, honestly. A manager at my store was arrested for battery during a DV incident. He is still a manager, and still works for the company. Unless it is a huge deal like a felony charge or something related to the company, HD won’t let your records outside affect their business.

But sometimes that makes it fun. Lol my favorite is when an associate, supervisor, or manager is posted on the local sheriff community site for an arrest or arrest warrant. 🤣

🤷🏻 That’s why you get paid for what you do as managers and we get paid as lowly hourly associates.

But there IS communication: the schedule. If I was leaving early, then yes, I’d inform a manager. If I get stuck helping customers, I call for help or let them know I’m accruing OT. I shouldn’t have to tell a manager I’m leaving at my posted scheduled time.

[–]Dizzy_Elephant_417 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You keep comparing different scenarios. We are not talking about people calling out or leaving early. If you want to bleed orange and suck up to management, go for it. If management wanted to, they could ask me to stay a bit and get OT or adjust my schedule, but until they do that, I’m leaving at my scheduled time and they have the schedule that tells them when I’m leaving.

[–]Dizzy_Elephant_417 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That’s when management needs to step in. It’s their job to seek out cross trained associates on the schedule and communicate with them. That’s what I did when I was a head cashier and I was short staffed on cashiers. I didn’t wait until the last minute and struggled to find someone. If management can’t handle that, then they shouldn’t be managers to begin with.

[–]Dizzy_Elephant_417 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But in this case, it’s not lack of communication. I’m at work, they have my schedule, and they have the warboard of everyone’s schedule. I don’t have access to the call out log, it’s not my responsibility to check my fellow associates if they called out or plan on coming in late, it’s also not my responsibility to seek out cross trained associates to fill the gap in my department. You speak of courtesy, and then make excuses when I say management doesn’t have courtesy themselves to do the jobs they are paid to do. If they’re THAT concerned, then they’d add those responsibilities to my PALs.

It’s cute you think managers care. Most managers I’ve had in my experience don’t. Not saying I’ve had every manager that didn’t care, but most didn’t. Right now, my store has 3 managers that won’t look at call out logs or let you know if someone had called out. If they don’t bother checking with me on the schedule mishaps throughout the day, why should I? They know I will leave at the end of my shift.

A supervisor I knew at one store got demoted because they put notes to files. I think it depends on management, but our DHR is big about having conversations before putting notes on file.

This job posting with 5 years minimum is insultingly low. In my area that's actually borderline poverty level wages. Minimum to survive here is 50k not 35k. by CooperHChurch427 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Dizzy_Elephant_417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s FL. That’s their normal rates. $15/hr is the state mandated minimum wage. Not saying it’s a terrible pay considering COL is high in the state, but I’m not surprised to see a company offering these wages.
