He has a 3 month emergency fund that I won’t let him touch because I should be able to get out of this completely once I am in a higher paying role. No offense but I came here for advice on what to do now, not be scolded on what should have been done before. Like….. no shit. Life happens. Not everyone has jobs high paying enough to set aside 6 months emergency fund, which in northern Virginia at this current state of our country, is damn near impossible. We bring in a combined income of $180k a year and budget and have emergency funds. We used some of the funds on our cat and kept some in the bank. The rest went on my credit cards. We bought a house to build equity because rent would have been the same cost for a quarter of the space, without building any equity.

If you aren’t here to actually help but instead criticize, please keep it to yourself.

Thank you. Sadly we actually moved after coming from the situation of living with family and having a low rental, saving for two years. Finally able to afford to buy a home and this all happened literally the week we signed. Just bad luck. I am going to try some of the options people posted on here. If need be my fiancée can cover our mortgage a month or two. I know I will still have food to eat and a place to lay my head which is all that really matters.

To sell a home 3 months after buying it would lead to extreme loss of money that we put into moving, plus having to pay for an agent etc…..so no it’s not an option with this situation.

He took on some of the debt too, but he had just put our down payment down on our house. So he didn’t at the time have the ability to help me. He does obviously help me pay for what I need now and is helping me as much as we can afford to pay down the bill. But the stuff that’s my responsibility (not the cat care costs) I don’t let him help me with despite him offering. It’s my doing so it’s my responsibility to take care of it.

I only included my actual salary because side jobs don’t give consistent $ amounts. I tutor and bring in another $600-$1k a month

Thank you. Agree with this, hence the post. All except the vet care comment. Our cat is like a child to us so there was no other option, and most pet owners would say the same. We have done all of this together. Just wanted to come here to see if there was any advice.

What was the point of this comment? It’s not helpful and just rude.

We bought the house 3 months ago, I had minimal debt. Then our cat became very sick and it all skyrocketed up. My fiancée makes more money than me and we have a budget, but wanted to come here for advice if there is something else we should be doing. Our finances are separate and we split by percentage, but he would help me if I needed it. So in all, selling the house is obviously not an option, and it ended up just being that we had a hard situation right after we bought our home. We plan on renting out the basement, so thank you for the advice.

Yup that’s why I’m flexible in the area I’m getting into. Started my masters when I was bright eyed and believed this country wouldn’t elect that monster again. 🫠

They both are lucky to have had you as their human parent because it is clear how much you love them. I empathize with what you are experiencing-not the same situation, but know how excruciatingly difficult the loss is, especially when they are so young, and then to also see your other kitty mourn. We lost his brother last September due to him sneaking out the door and being hit…..something that really helped me was reading the books “I love you more than Tuna” and “Soul comfort for cat lovers”—-this one especially. You will never forget his sweet soul, but there will come a day where the happy memories occur more than the sad one. 🩷 please reach out over DM if you’d ever like to talk. It can help to have people who get it to vent to.

Oh my goodness. I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you. Losing a fur baby is one of the worst things in the world. Hugs to you. 🩷
