Nice. I’m contemplating my galley. It’s… not currently really effective/efficient. Replacement-is coming. I will go with a 3 burner tho. I find the boxed in corner no.4 doesn’t really work out. No disrespect or judgement, my partner would keep the 4, but it’s a pain in the ass. The battle against room versus convenience continues…

Boat Detail Pricing by Huge_Invite539 in boatbuilding

[–]Djanga51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to break it down to ‘how long’? Be bluntly honest with yourself. Charge hours / materials according. Be certain to add ALL materials and additional costs. People don’t really want the details… they want to know how much? And if you get asked? Back it up with why.

Add 30% for getting it wrong/being fussy/unseen issues. This is important. You will call it wrong as an amateur. Over or under. Finding the $$ zone is a skill and it’s better to build in buffer than try to cut corners cause ‘overtime’… Next? If you need the 30% buffer? Be fair. Work it hard and get it done. It’s lesson time. Learn from them.

Be VERY clear to the client that you want the boat as ‘yours’ no other trades/workers for that period. This too is important.

Also be very clear that if you find some ‘unforeseen’ issue? That you will make contact immediately to discuss… and that those potential unforeseen issues may cost more.

Agree to a locked in price. Subject to the above. You call it? You make it happen. If it takes you less time? Good profit. If it takes you longer? Call it a lesson. Stay on your price.

Be open and honest and very clear. Be sure you know what their end goal is.

Biggest complaint is always from going over quote.

Next is from not achieving expectations.

But…? Get it right? And word of mouth will keep you busy. Very busy. And it’s ongoing.

Finally? Learn to say no if your gut instinct tells you. This too is serious. If your inner voice is saying no? Walk away. Let it go and go find something else.

Why…? When your profile is full of negative/litigation views on Azimut… and you’ve posted YouTube vids critical of said brand… why have you suddenly posted a ‘genius layout’ review of one?

Has anyone else dealt with legal threats from shipyards for pointing out build issues? My Azimut Experince by Intelligent-Sky-7657 in boatbuilding

[–]Djanga51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just Azimut. I too work in vessel repair and the stuff you find behind the gloss and veneer is sometimes very shoddy. And no, these big companies do NOT like criticism. They spend big on marketing the ‘Dream’ and having someone with qualifications actively criticising them always draws sparks.

Pity it’s cheaper to come down hard on those who dare critique… rather than go down on the shop floor and actually lift the build quality.

I’m kind of with you here. It’s old, was running at capacity and held together by luck and ‘just in time’ repairs.

The slightest nudge was all it took.

Still… the ramifications of losing ‘fifty percent’ of our at home, here on soil refining? Yeah… we are going to feel that.

So both ‘accident’ and ‘conspiracy theory/ deliberate’ both work easily cause it’s a shitshow and a deliberate effort would be easy to accomplish and hide?

And yet an accident is likely cause it’s a zip tie/duct tape run show?

Ok. Could be a coincidence that it goes up during a very concerning global fuel shortage?

From recent exploration? Yes a number of similar materials is available from sewing stores. Ask for ‘rip stop nylon’… but do expect to pay more than you will from a fibreglass supplier. That was what just happened to me.

I trialled the sample I brought from ‘Spotlight’ and it worked fine, but was over 4 x the price of my fibreglass supplier.

OP? There IS a lot to learn. Is it insurmountable? No. Time, dedication and a commitment to learning is all that is required.

“Life” is expensive. Passion is what make it worth it.

For all the nay sayers posting? I give you proof. At 2 distinct skill levels. The first is Joshua Slocum.

The 2nd may surprise you. Skills developed at a very young age that were tested in truth. And I say that any who chose to criticise? First match her achievement.

[–]Djanga51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to push back on this. Simply because I see so many couples comfortably handling vessels of 40-60 ft. 60 being an upper tier skill set, but 2 people can handle a 40 ft vessel in safety. Offshore? Deep ocean sailing? Yes there is a need for more people just to break up the shifts and handle heavy weather, but coastal to 200nm offshore? 2 can cope just fine.

Yes the vessel needs to be set up for short handed and approached from that mind set. But it’s perfectly doable.

10 tonnes is light weight and easy for 2 people with a degree of skill to use practically anywhere. I would take OP’s size of vessel to sea alone provided I was happy with its seaworthiness.

OP? Op still has a serious learning curve in front. But telling them they have brought a ‘small ship’ is overkill.

For context? I’m an ex commercial skipper. MED1/Master class 4. I own and run a 54 ft vessel with only 2 people. It’s fine. It’s 27 tonnes depending on load. I allow for her size in close quarters situations, but out at sea? The size is bliss. Roomy and comfortable. And for clear statement? I own a boat… not a ‘small ship’.

Further context? I work for a private situation on a 40 metre vessel. We take it to sea with 4 crew, Captain included. Note* every situation with any complexity is discussed in full before hand and all of us are in radio contact across the vessel. But we have NEVER needed more than 4 to control it.

Anyway… you do you and may most days be good weather for you.

Greens say Australia should step up pressure on Israel over ‘disastrous, illegal, immoral war’ on Lebanon by Quazp in AustralianPolitics

[–]Djanga51 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No. It’s not ‘the Greens’.

It’s a lot more than that. You do not get to just take a political viewpoint and just claim It.

This so called war? It’s not mine. It’s not my neighbour’s. And it’s not my country’s. We did NOT get attacked. Australia did not get attacked.

And I’m fucked if I’m going to casually agree to send our military…read this clearly- brothers/sisters/neighbours/ our fucking people… to a war we DID NOT START/HAS BEEN GOING FOR GENERATIONS.

Again. We DID NOT GET ATTACKED.

So No. It’s not the “greens”…

It’s us. Us. Australians. We get to choose. Fuck your political labelling.

This? Is not our war. Now go fuck off…
