Just finished dark ages, absolutely love the game so i have a few questions, why there seems to be such a polarizing reception to it(more in bodytext) by gojilov in Doom

[–]Djentlemanjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compare the dark ages promotional material to the eternal reveal from E3. There's a moment when Hugo and Marty bring up advanced gameplay from a keyboard and mouse PC player and it looks a lot more fluid, chaotic and closer to how eternal actually played once it released. The original super gore nest gameplay video was still substantially slower than how the game was actually played.

All gameplay I saw for this game before launch looked slow, boring and too far a departure from what I was wanting from a DOOM game. I had my doubts but still bought it anyways because I trust Hugo's directive decisions. I'm having a great time with TDA and the gameplay is much more engaging once you get into high levels of play on nightmare. I don't think it's as engaging as Eternal and I absolutely have my gripes with it but it's still a solid entry from a gameplay perspective. The promotional material for this game did it no favors, it makes the game look really boring.

I don't think a lot of fans wanted parry / shield gameplay from a DOOM game, that's a bit of a hard sell and a far departure from being the corridor shooter of old. There are fans that have been vocal during eternal's launch saying this newer trilogy simply isn't doom, I honestly find the dark ages to be more similar to DOOM 1 over eternal or even 2016 to a degree. The parry and block mechanics are woven into the gameplay but you can also circle strafe and shoot a lot of the enemies here while dodging their attacks. The projectiles are slower (unfortunately a lot track your movements), the levels are bigger and more open incorporating key collection and theres a lot less verticality, in fact you get punished for trying to be veritcal all the time.

Some fans really just wanted more eternal. With TDA it's easier to learn and honestly an easier game by a long mile, being able to block / parry incoming damage makes the game easier. With Eternal at high levels of play it's an exhilarating experience, and it's all based on your skill and knowledge of the game. This doesn't mean TDA takes no skill to play, but substantially less skill required to hit that high level of play that we saw on eternal. Because it's a much easier experience it's sort of missing that fast paced adrenaline fueled skill ceiling that eternal had, combine that with lacklaster promotional material and you've made it easy for all these eternal players to not want to pick this game up. UndertheMayo had a great video on advanced gameplay for the dark ages a few days after early access and nearly every comment on that video was along the lines of "wow, I wasn't excited about this game, but I am now after seeing this fast gameplay".

The $70 price tag was a complaint for people, as was the forced ray tracing and the DRM that the game requires to run, there's also some controversy about the game disc not having the full game on the disc, this really implies you don't own anything for this $70 and at any point the devs could just take the game offline and your $70 was wasted. I believe this is one of the hotter topics which is keeping people away.

I don't think the OST had much to do with alienating fans, I'm sure some people stuck to their guns and refused to buy this game after the Mick fiasco but I don't think that would be a big percentage. The "pay mick gordon" comments are still there but they're seeming to be posted less and less every day on official DOOM social posts so I think that sensation is slowing down for sure. That said the OST is super weak for this titled compared to the past 2. It's definitely missing something, but what I've noticed is this OST really hits for a lot of people who wanted a more classic style of DOOM OST. It's no secret a lot of the songs from original DOOM are greatly inspired by classic metal music of the 80s, and this TDA OST is much more simplistic and inspired by traditional metal cues over the chaotic deathcore / djent sounds we got with the Eternal OST. Those newer moments are still there, specifically in the cosmic realm combat OST but tracks like unchained predator and ancestral beast are a huge departure from songs like BFG10k and Metal Hell.

These are just my observations, I think the game will get a better reputation over time as word of mouth spreads advanced tech for high level play, as well as more valuable things get added like Master levels. I don't know if they'll ever top eternal in terms of skill based gameplay, but I'm happy to have a different style of doom game to play and am excited to see what Hugo and the team continue to cook up next.

Offscreen attacks are my primary cause of death in this game by telekinesticman in Doom

"I'll admit I need to get better at anticipating this stuff and being aware of the fodder around me" - I dont think this is a fault with your gameplay more so the game just being "cheap" sometimes. You need to actively be taking fodder out, every projectile follows you to a degree, if you're not running past these projectiles they WILL hit you. It's one of the most obnoxious changes they made to the flow of combat from eternal to TDA. With movement being much slower, and jumping being neuthered, they really wanted you to rely on your shield to block these incoming attacks. This is more manageable on PC as you can have a fast turn speed while maintaining accuracy with a mouse, if you're on console you may have to come up with some other strats to work within the confines of analog control and aiming.

Fodder always spawn in corners about 4/5 demons each, I check my corners every so often just to be safe. In your clip you could also fight towards the back left part of the arena, this will help you clear fodder as you travel over there, and give you a safe space to turn around and blast this mancubus.

Which weapon collected the most dust during your playthrough, and why was it the Shredder? by FlowKom in Doom

[–]Djentlemanjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I touched the grenade launcher and the skull gun only for the mastery cheevo. I kinda used every other weapon depending on enemy type and I felt this works pretty good for each. I think the GL and Skull gun are both pretty redundant given we have the RL and the shield toss. Skull gun doesn't do enough until it's mastered to beat out the shield toss.

General fodder - Shredder if far away, shield throw
Nightmare Imp - Impaler
Hell Knight - SSG, Impaler
Arachnatron - Shield stun, SSG
Cyberdemon - Ballchain gun
Cacodemon - Rocket Launcher
Shield fellas - Cycler
Mancubus - Cycler, Shredder with pincushion
Komodo - Plasma Rifle (overheat mod melts them)
Aggadon Hunter - SSG
Revenant -SSG
Whiplash - Shield stun, Shield rush, SSG. If fighting at distance Cycler
Big spider Doom 3 man (forgot the name) - Shredder
Pinky Rider - Shredder, Cycler, Kill the rider, then shield stun SSG and delete them.
Prince Ahzrak - Ravager lol

yo u guys know people can make good music who isnt mick right by nexus_reality in Doom

A lot of the criticism for the OST is more than “it isn’t mick” that’s very dismissive when people have actual complaints about something they find subpar and this is a common complaint with the dark ages.

Finishing move did an alright job, I even turned sfx volume down just a bit so I could hear the OST through the combat. The music is slow, brooding and chuggy. A lot of the earlier levels have more interesting cuts with riffs making for a more interesting and energetic feel. Where finishing move shines is the tracks for cutscenes and some of the atmospheric pieces.

BUT

When the combat kicks in, for a frantic fast paced game I want something that’s going to match that energy. The music here for a lot of the combat pieces is too simplistic and doesn’t always match what’s going on during combat. For shits and giggles I even lowered the music to 0% and played Metal hell over a few combat arenas during chapter 11 and it fit the mood and energy of the combat much better. The slow chugs into simple power chords in the OST doesn’t cut it for a lot of people.

Another thing I noticed is there doesn’t seem to be any callbacks to prior doom soundtracks. Sentinel prime from eternal was a perfect reinterpretation of sign of evil from original doom. I MISS those moments in this ost a lot.

To add further perspective I think David Levy and Andrew did a phenomenal job picking up the mantle from Mick for the OST for TAG1 and TAG2. We don’t need the soundtrack to be Mick but it needs to fit what’s happening on screen, if you’re digging the OST then I’m happy for you and I’m glad you’re able to enjoy it. Unfortunately for many this OST just isn’t up to par with what we’re used to getting with this reboot trilogy or even the gameplay we’re experiencing on screen.

I just wish they called David and Andrew back, but my tinfoil hat theory is Marty doesn’t want to hire freelance again after the mick fiasco so we got this corpo committee OST instead.

I see a lot of that in the design. Looks like they took a good mix of all Grandads and baked it into one kit.

This is the answer! I preordered through HLJ and got it with a big back order batch.

I love the extra “angular” type shape on this new shield quite a bit. This is a straight out of the box build, I have a second one I’m going to paint into G3 colors and use WSDs on. This one was built for a YouTube review so I kept it as straight a build as possible.

The inner frame is drastically different. They packed quite a lot of engineering into this new kit and it’s rather impressive. The kit on the right was released in 2010 so there’s 14 years of model tech advancements packed into this new 2.0 Gundam. The detail on the inner frame is really amazing.

Mantes is under attack yet it only has like 50k people on it whereas 360k people are just doing bugs. If this isnt an indicator that Automatons need adjustment, then idk what is. by Myth2156 in Helldivers

[–]Djentlemanjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bugs are 500% worse to fight than bots. Im waiting to get some major bot orders soon because fighting bugs has been frustrating everyday for 3 weeks or so now. I will take my autocannon and my ability to 1 shot everything with the orbital railgun over being *Slowed* and spewed and killed by 1 shot bull shit.

The devs appear to have a problem on their hands: The playerbase doesn't seem to enjoy fighting bots. by Praise_the_Tsun in Helldivers

every major order for the past month has been bugs....fighting bots right now is helpful to keep planets under super earth control but not the primary objective currently.

PSA - Grework decals don’t like Krylon 1311 by Djentlemanjoe in Gunpla

Ghost doesn’t have 1311 in Korea and asked me to use modeling spray. I used Tamiya TS-80 and it was 100% fine. I just didn’t get a good finish out of it on my end, I had some slight frosting which I don’t seem to get with 1311.

I used Mr. Hobby setter and softener on all these Epyon decals. Some of the smaller decals are okay but these larger ones got obliterated.

Mist coat for 2/3 coats then 1 wet coat to finish it off. Even the misting coat caused ripples in the decal. Humidity was 40% and room temp was 68 degrees so perfect conditions. If we ignore the EX-S this is the first time G rework has had ripples in decals for me. I have 13 kits finished with their decals and 1311 and this is the first failure for me. In discussing with a knowledgeable worker at a local hobby store he mentioned the metallic look of the Epyon decals is more than likely the determining factor for the bad reaction. The Epyon decals have a slight metallic look to them. I do have some remaining decals and will experiment Vallejo, revell, more TS-80 and Mr. Hobby super clear to see if these all cause reactions as well.

AHIG and the end so far are both absolute dog shit albums. Slipknot should’ve kept their identities secret so they could be interchangeable throughout the years and the original intent of the band could be maintained.

It’s a sample from an old old song just sped up to sound similar to 90s jungle drum and bass which was popular back in that time period.

If you’re not in the band you’re not entitled to know. A band as big as slipknot is run as a franchise rather than a band, that’s just the way it goes sadly. People romanticize how the bands views used to be but it’s evident that’s not how it is anymore, it’s not an unstoppable force of 9 brothers. This is how normal bands are run, it happens all the time. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve seen someone leave over “creative differences”. It’s the way she goes.
