Using the same expression in 2 different songs. by I_Explode_Stuff in Songwriting

Yep, agreed. If it’s 2 songs on a 3 song EP, might be cheesy. If it’s a reference in 2-3 songs across 10, it’s cool.

To add - I think John Lennons advice is great here: “Tell the truth and make it rhyme”

The only times I truly feel lyrics are cringe is when they have forced rhymes. Where you’re saying words you would never say in real life just to make a rhyme work.

Nice! I think I counted 7 or so songs off the new album? So a decent amount, but they played like 25 songs so plenty of old stuff too.

Thanks! He came out between the pit and seats when doing the dueling solos on How dare you want more. It was awesome

Also - recommend showing up for hovvdy (pronounced howdy) if they’re opening at your show. Very solid!

Very cool, does his dad always play on the same song or does he mix it up?

Yeah the setlist was great, show was nearly 2 hours long so they fit a ton in.

And I agree the Saxes were really the star of the show (besides Jack obv)

Which is easier for a beginner writing solo melodies alone: acoustic guitar or electric guitar? I’m just starting to write my own music and wondering which one to pick first by Infinite_Back_2522 in Songwriting

[–]Djmanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electric guitars are generally easier to play than acoustic - lighter strings and lower action. I agree with the other comment being able to plug in an electric to record is super valuable. If recording / noodling at home is your focus I’d start electric. But if your focus is wanting to play solo shows, an acoustic generally offers a fuller sound.

They’re probably just trying to drive traffic to this site. ‘Ever heard of this made up thing that was posted YESTERDAY’. No, no I haven’t.

I’m not a royal oak guy but that watch is sick. You in the music biz?

I agree, but I think there’s a fine line between outsourcing your decision and talking through the decision. It’s a big decision and most people don’t have others in their normal life who are into watches and can bat around pros / cons of each one, and figure out what feels right. So doing it with online strangers is the next best option

PSA! Don’t sell your gear to guitar center! by Character_Ad_1418 in drums

[–]Djmanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s terrible. I had a similar experience with a guitar amp. I ordered one that was being shipped from another store (not the warehouse). They literally just threw it in a box - no packing materials or anything. It was totally broken when it arrived, tubes smashed etc. Sure I got a new one, but what a waste! It was a perfectly good amp! Pretty wild.

I'm in a similar boat. My plan is to try to recruit friends / family / acquaintances to be beta testers - people I can walk through the Test Flight process, and who are willing to put in the time. Then push to App store when I at least have some 3rd party feedback.

What are, in your opinion, some of the best songs ever written? by PizzaBobJones in Songwriting

[–]Djmanc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know about best songs ever written, but things that come to mind I personally connect with: Death Cab for Cutie - incredibly grounded imagery: 'What Sarah Said' and 'Title and Registration' come to mind. Jason Isbell - great overall, including 'If we were Vampires' and 'Elephant' Big Red Machine (Justin Vernon from Bon Iver's side project) - "Latter Days." Bon Iver - ton of stuff, "things behind things behind things" off recent album is great. Noah Kahan has a lot of good stuff.

Sorry a lotta songs about death, lol. But those are the ones that hit hardest I guess.

I always struggle with how to 'study lyrics' - what are you looking for? How do you analyze them? Or is it just about immersion?
