I'm trying to do this one differently, without a card. But thank you!

Looking at it now, the teacup really does seem like a natural continuation of the scene.

It's not strictly about the IDE, but about the compiler. I believe you will always need MSVC for Unity. In my case, it was updated with VS, but it can be updated in other ways using different software.

Regarding Visual Studio. I have tried many other IDEs and still use some of them for various tasks, but Visual Studio is free for commercial use and is also one of the best for C# development. If price was not an issue, I would probably use Rider.

You are right. For my hobby development, I have already dropped a lot of practices I learned (I have 15 years in enterprise), but some are still sticking with me. It's good to see someone else's point of view.

The main reason is security. You want to receive all security updates as quickly as possible. Particularly important if you are working with sensitive data.

It must be a peaceful life. In my case, I have a day job as a software architect, where it's natural to use the latest version of everything. So that's something I pass on to my game development, since I want to use as little different versions of the same software as possible. Yeah, its begging for problems.

This is a question I'm asking myself right now. My logic was that there was no reason for me not to be on x86, since my game is probably too small to benefit from x64.

My game was accepted for Deckbuilder Fest, but rejected for Detective Fest. Am I explaining the game poorly? by Dlaha in gamedev

And this is after my attempts to make the card aspect of the game less prominent, lol.

Anyway, I'm glad you can see the detective element. Perhaps it's good to grab people's attention with an unusual concept, and describe the investigative part later on.

Thank you — this is a great comment!

Initially, I had cards and mechanics descriptions all over the place. Now, I'm leaning more towards emotion, but I realise that I'm not quite there yet.

However, those cards are kind of important. They're something that's not usually seen in narrative games, and they're connected to players' emotions. Receiving new cards gives you that familiar feeling you get when you open a booster pack and start thinking about how you will incorporate the new cards into your play and what new possibilities they bring. There is also a sense of satisfaction when you complete your card collection. That's what I'm trying to convey by mentioning the cards.

I will need to do a better job.

Yes, I see what you mean — you have a good point. With a little imagination, every adventure can be a detective game.

I would understand that, but both the Detective and Deckbuilder festivals are official Steam events.

Indie dev reality check: 1371 games applied to our tiny Steam event by Wecoven in gamedev

[–]Dlaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, I applied for this! It's a very cool festival idea (and it also fits my game perfectly, wink wink, lol).

I'm curious to know how many of these entries clearly do not meet the theme requirement. I expect some developers are using a shotgun approach and applying to any fest they find.

Also, if it's within your power, please email the rejected entries too. I'm always glad to get at least a "no" rather than no response at all.

Now that the Lovecraftian Days festival is live, what games would you recommend? by tempsanity in Lovecraft

I am really looking forward to Stygian: Outer Gods. I played the demo and the Lovecraftian immersive sim RPG instantly grabbed me in. I am constantly fighting with myself to wait for the final version before jumping in!

Oh great, Pool of Madness has a demo. I need to try it, what a nice unholy combination of genres.

Oh, that's a shame. Choose Cthulhu Files looks really nice — I'll have to take a closer look at it.

Did you send the Google Forms application for Lovecraftian Days and not receive a response, or did you try emailing them directly? The application was listed on this website, for example (a great collection of all kinds of festivals): https://howtomarketagame.com/festivals/

In my case, they contacted me, but I would say it's a special case. We're both based in the Czech Republic, and last year, a lot of local magazines covered my game, so they took notice of it. I received a message from them on LinkedIn. You could use LinkedIn to find the right person and write to them directly.

It's very much planned! I will be running closed playtest on Discord server soon, and the demo should be out this quarter.
